SumOfUs is looking for a Finance and Operations Contractor to help ensure we have a strong foundation to win campaigns against corporations behaving badly. If you love fighting for change, if you are excited about global economic justice, and if you love spreadsheets, numbers, and keeping teams running smoothly, then this might be the role for you.

This role will primarily focus on managing finances and operations at SumOfUs, and has a key role in accounts payable and budget reporting. This role requires excellent attention to detail, experience with nonprofit finance, and a grounding in anti-oppression principles.

This position is a temporary, part-time (estimated up to 25 hours per week), contracted role, beginning April 2021 and running through October/November 2021. This role is remote and can be undertaken by anyone in a time zone between GMT +1 (Central European Time, West Africa Time) and GMT -8 (West Coast Americas), with a preference for working hours in the eastern time zone in North or South America (GMT -4 or -5).

What you’ll do as part of our team
Accounts Payable:

  • Responsible for overseeing and managing the bi-monthly accounts payable process, including:
    • Reviewing invoices and expense reimbursements, and sometimes entering payment information into Quickbooks and relevant payment systems
    • Making vendor and staff payments
    • Communication with staff and vendors to troubleshoot, as needed

Monthly Close:

  • Helping the Operations and Finance team close the monthly books, including:
    • Communication with our bookkeeper
    • Saving and sharing all monthly bank statements
    • Coding staff credit card expenses
    • Responding to and following-up on open items
  • Completing monthly cash flow statement in Excel once books are closed

Finance and Fundraising Reports:

  • Run quarterly team budget reports, more often as requested
  • As needed by the Development team, creating grant budgets and financial reports for funders

Audit:

  • Help audit lead as needed to close the 2020 audit

Other Responsibilities:

  • Check-in weekly with the staff on tasks including:
    • Entering and managing invoices (entering into the accounting system, saving and naming invoices, marking invoices as paid in the accounting system)
    • Monitoring our online mailboxes
    • One-off finance and operations projects
    • Managing check deposits – depositing and sending thank yous
  • If needed, help facilitate the transition from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online
  • Other tasks as assigned

Skills and experiences you’ll need to bring:

And, this role, in particular, will require you to:

  • Have 3 or more years of experience in Finance;
  • Have excellent organizational skills, be able to track multiple moving pieces of work;
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
  • Strong competence with QuickBooks, Google Drive, and Excel;
  • Experience doing accounts payable;
  • Be able to handle sensitive information with integrity and maintain the confidentiality of information;
  • Have a strong equity lens, understand oppression, and bring anti-oppression principles into all aspects of work;
  • Be comfortable with technology, learning, and figuring out new systems, then providing support to team members;
  • Be willing to learn and approach challenges with curiosity and from a solutions-based mindset; and
  • Excellent time management skills, and the ability to navigate working across multiple time zones

Big pluses

We know that no one can possibly have all these skills and experiences – you will likely be able to bring 2 or 3 of the following to our team:

  • Experience with Box;
  • Project management experience;
  • Knowledge of and experience with US-based accounting standards, residency in the US is not required;
  • Experience drafting budgets for grants, tracking spending, and producing grant reports;
  • Experience working remotely. We all work remotely and you will need to have your own computer and reliable internet access;
  • Daytime availability in eastern US time zone, with some flexibility; or
  • Experience working with a nonprofit organization with employees in several countries, especially if you’re based outside the US.

Further details

This job is paid hourly by number of hours worked, and hourly pay rate range will be between $35-50/ hour USD, depending on experience and seniority, and location.
