DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF THABA-CHITJA ISLAND HOLDAY RESORT
The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) facilitates for the development of tourism destination areas to ensure quality and memorable experience of visitors/tourists in any destination, as part of tourism product development.
Thaba-chitja Island is an island located within the Mohale dam, Maseru district. It is one of the key tourist destination areas within the LHWP area. The area is popularly visited by tourists seeking after adventure and cultural tourism. It is further visited for other activities such as dam tours, biking, boat cruise and picnicking. Thaba-chitja Island used to have some chalets which were unfortunately burned down by the fire. However, the Corporation intends to transform tourism and to attract high-end market tourists to the area, through development of an up-market resort with a minimum of 20 chalets with capacity of 40 guestrooms that will off er a unique touristic experience to guests.
This development of a 5-star holiday resort will be on the island with an approximate site size of 526,927.83 m². The coordinates of the site are -29.431193, 28.090058. Based on the above background, the LTDC invites eligible investors that will develop an up-market holiday resort which shall cater for the establishment of:
i. A 5 Star Green accommodation facility with a capacity of not less than 20 chalets (for 40 guestrooms) such as presidential, honeymoon and executive suites, as well as a few standard rooms.
ii. Up-market restaurant
iii. A multi-purpose room for meetings, weddings and any events etc.
iv. A well-structured boating jetty and Helipad
v. Any additional facilities meant to further make the area more appealing based on the rich biodiversity within the catchment would be an added advantage.
The interested bidders shall undergo a three-stage process of:
- Presentation of business concepts to an Adjudication Panel, followed by shortlisting to the next stage;
- LTDC issuance of RFP for development of a detailed proposal and shortlisting of top 3 bidders;
- Selection and negotiation with the preferred bidder out of the submitted proposals.

The interested bidder is to submit the following documents:
- Letter of Expression of Interest
- Company profile
- Certificate of Incorporation and Company Extract
- Proof of experience in developing and managing similar facilities
- Business concept of the Thaba-chitja Island Holiday Resort
- Proposal on community engagement and tourism SME support
- Proof of Financial capacity to support the proposed concept. N.B, the interested bidder shall finance and manage the project at own cost.
