Description of Project: Strategic Plan for the Health Justice Initiative

The Health Justice Initiative (HJI):

The HJI is a dedicated not for profit, donor funded, public health and law initiative addressing the intersection between racial and gender inequality with a special focus on access to life saving diagnostics, treatment and vaccines for COVID-19, TB and HIV, drawing on the expertise of researchers in law, public policy, economics, and public health, as well as on universities and scientific experts in and outside of South Africa. It was established in July 2020.

Purpose of the Consultancy

The overall objective of this consultancy is to assist the HJI to develop a three-year strategic plan.

Tasks

The scope of work for the Consultant (individual or organisation) will include, but is not limited to the following:
Co-develop a strategic planning process and timeline with the staff of HJI.
Undertake a local and global stakeholder mapping and situational analysis.
Interview key stakeholders as determined by the HJI (up to 12 interviews) to inform the situational analysis and to make recommendations on the strategic pillars for the HJI.
Draft a strategy guiding document for discussion with the staff, advisory group, and Board.
Recommend a monitoring and reporting framework.

Timeframes

The consultancy is estimated to take 15 working days, with a first draft by late April and a post feedback final draft by mid-May.

Criteria
1. Experience in leading strategic planning processes within the health or social justice field in South Africa or the Global South
2. Familiarity with the public health system and state of civil society and health sector in South Africa
3.  Strong facilitation and interviewing skills
