Women and Law in Southern Africa- Lesotho

Position Overview:

The Executive Director (ED) of Women and Law in Southern Africa- Lesotho (WLSA-Lesotho) is a senior leadership role responsible for driving the organization’s mission to advance the socio-economic, political, and legal rights of women and girls in Lesotho. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will provide strategic leadership, manage operations, and represent WLSA Lesotho in various capacities. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the following are the specific roles and responsibilities of the ED.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Leadership:

– Develop and execute a strategic plan aligned with WLSA’s mission and vision.

– Lead the organization in achieving its objectives, ensuring measurable impact.

– Foster a culture of inclusivity, gender sensitivity, and collaboration within the organization.

2. Advocacy and Policy Reform:

– Engage with government authorities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to advocate for legal reforms and policy changes benefiting women and girls.

– Lead lobbying efforts to eliminate discriminatory laws and practices.

– Work to improve legislation that protects women’s legal rights in Lesotho.

3. Research and Education:

– Oversee collaborative research projects in the socio-legal field, ensuring the generation of evidence-based solutions.

– Promote the organization’s research findings to influence policy and legal changes.

– Enhance the justice sector’s capacity to interpret and enforce women’s legal rights through educational initiatives.

4. Resource Mobilization:

– Develop and implement fundraising strategies to secure funding for WLSA Lesotho’s programs and projects.

– Cultivate relationships with donors, foundations, and partners to sustain the organization’s financial stability.

5. Team Management:

– Recruit, mentor, and manage a diverse team of professionals.

– Foster a collaborative and high-performing work environment.

– Ensure effective utilization of resources and compliance to organizational and donor regulations.

6. Public Awareness and Advocacy:

– Lead efforts to increase public awareness of women’s legal rights through campaigns, workshops, and community engagement.

– Represent WLSA Lesotho in public forums, conferences, and media to promote the organization’s mission.

7. Financial and Operational Oversight:

– Develop and manage the organization’s budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility.

– Monitor and evaluate programmatic effectiveness and impact.

– Ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

– Advanced degree in law, social sciences, gender studies, or a related field.

– Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive leadership experience in NGOs, including a track record of successful advocacy and project management.

– Proven experience in leadership and management roles, preferably in the non-profit making sectors.

– Strong understanding of gender and legal issues, particularly in the context of Lesotho.

– Exceptional communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills.

– Proven experience in fundraising and financial management.

– A deep commitment to women’s and children’s rights and social justice.
