Environmental Technician ( Grade9/HRL15 )

Sappi Ngodwana Mill requires a ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN to support the Risk Specialist in ensuring Mill compliance to the environmental policies and objectives, adhering to the requirements of external environmental authorities and legal licenses

This role reports into the Risk Specialist Environmental

The main responsibilities of this job are:

  • Responsible for monitoring and measuring compliance in the following environmental areas: air, recycling, barrow pits, water, waste, sewage, farm, macro dump, lime dump, boreholes, Hazchem, composting, environmental representative training, environmental document operating system, other general items as assigned
  • Act as an expert to support line managers, foremen and supervisors by guiding them on the most appropriate or relevant revised environmental policies and objectives
  • Assist in scheduling, conducting and leading internal and external audits
  • Analyse audits results to ensure that findings are actioned and closed out
  • Liaise with Internal and External Auditors, Consultants, Accreditation body, other Mills, customers and suppliers
  • Ensure that the environmental management system (based on the ISO 14001, 9001 and FSC standard) is implemented and maintained
  • Participate in local and regional environmental meetings convened by relevant external authorities
  • Investigate environmental complaints received internally or externally
  • Assist with environmental management with additional focus during shuts and projects
  • Keep abreast of environmental regulations and advise or create awareness and ownership within the Mill
  • Consult with I&AP’s (DWA&F, DEAT, DAEA etc) on changes to environmental permits/licenses to operate
  • Collect, interpret and analyse information for compiling legal compliance and performance reports
  • Monitor and oversee departmental legal compliance performance in the Mill on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis and advice accordingly

The ideal candidate should have:

  • National Diploma (Environmental/Chemical Engineering) or equivalent
  • 2 – 4 years relevant technical environmental experience
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation and permitting processes
