Project Overview

The Market Driven Irrigated Horticulture Project (MDIH) aims to establish a sustainable and inclusive model of irrigation, water resources, and land management in Lesotho.

About the Role:

The Environmental Specialist shall provide leadership to environmental monitoring, ESMP, and resettlement coordination for the entire program.

They shall report to the Team Leader during the base period and the Chief Construction Manager during the option period.

Duties shall include oversight of CESMPs, RAPs/RLPs, and other environmental impact mitigation plans.

The Environmental Specialist shall be employed as needed during the base period and shall be based in Maseru for the full duration of the option period.

Key Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • University degree in relevant environmental studies or related field.

General Professional Experience:

  • Minimum of 15 or more years of demonstrable experience with managing and providing oversight for projects’ compliance with environmental permits and regulations.

Specific Professional Experience:

  • Operational knowledge of IFC Performance Standards or similar international health and safety and environmental and social safeguard measures on a minimum of two projects in the past five years.
  • Experience on a minimum of one project in overseeing the implementation of ESMPs, environmental flow requirements associated with water diversion schemes, agricultural and biological assessments, the environmental and social implications of surface impoundments and dams, catchment management, waterworks infrastructure, climate change implications on similar projects, and review and implementation of environmental/social safeguard documentation is desirable.
  • Experience on at least one project that demonstrates strong communication skills to engage effectively with irrigation system designers and construction contractors.
  • Prior international experience and experience in working in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
