Environment and Social Safeguards Specialist 

Reports to:  Project Manager Economic Inclusion Program

CRS Lesotho country program is currently seeking qualified, experienced, dynamic, and highly motivated candidates for a Environment and Social Safeguards Specialist position to support Implementation of an Economic Inclusion Program (EIP) under the anticipated Pathways to Sustainable Livelihoods Project.  

Job Summary: 

The Environment and Social Safeguards Specialist will be responsible for management and mitigation of social and environmental impacts resulting from the implementation of the project, as well as for quality assurance of all processes across all project service areas.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Analyze capacity gaps of the project staff, partners, beneficiaries and other key stakeholders in regard to Environment and Social Safeguards.
  • Develop clear and comprehensive project guidelines on Environment and Social Safeguards in line with the national and international regulations and standards; and ensure endorsement by the client (MoGYSCA&SD) and the donor (World Bank). 
  • Develop relevant Environment and Social Safeguards training material for respective groups of the EIP stakeholders. 
  • Train the project staff, beneficiaries and other project key stakeholders on project environment and social safeguards guidelines.
  • Monitor compliance of environment and social safeguards guidelines across all the project components and implement appropriate corrective measures where necessary.
  • Ensure integration of social issues in all stages of Economic Inclusion Program life cycle.
  • Compile progress and training reports for environment and social safeguards component in a timely manner and share with the project Manager and other key stakeholders,
  • Support development of the project annual implementation plan and budget and ensure that environment and social safeguards activities and budget allocations are relevant and adequate.
  • Ensure human rights-based approaches (HRBA) are incorporated in all project activities and carry out regular monitoring

Education and Experience

  • The Environment and Social Safeguards Specialist must have at least a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work, Sociology, Anthropology, Applied Social Science, Environment Science or other related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in Environment and Safeguards field in Lesotho. 
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills as well as good judgment and vision. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound coordination skills and a demonstrated ability to multi-task.
  • Demonstrates diplomacy, flexibility, and resourcefulness.
  • Strong critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills. 
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Required Languages – Excellent written and spoken Sesotho and English
