The CSIR has a vacancy for Environmental Officer in the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) portfolio. The purpose of this position is to assist the Manager: Environmental Management with the implementation of the CSIR Environmental Sustainability Strategy and operational plans. The position is based in Pretoria.


Key responsibilities:

  • Implement the approved environmental management plans and other environmental permits;
  • Provide and/or facilitate training to Divisions/Clusters/Portfolios on CSIR environmental management procedures;
  • Evaluate and track trends on environmental data using identified tools (i.e., collection of environmental data (water, waste, and energy usage), analysis of data and interpretation for presentation to relevant stakeholders);
  • Monitor and manage contractors for delivery on environmental requirements in projects and assist in assessing projects for environmental compliance;
  • Control environmental documentation in line with ISO 14001;
  • Investigate, follow-up, and maintain environmental incident register;
  • Participate in all environmental audits, follow-up on all findings and ensure corrective and preventative actions are in place, as well as implement action plans from audit findings;
  • Perform environmental inspections and submit relevant reports;
  • Maintain the environmental aspects and impacts register;
  • Stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree or national diploma in Environmental Management or related discipline with at least three years’ experience in dealing with environmental related matters at operational level;
  • Additional environmental management training courses will be an advantage;
  • Knowledge and understanding of environmental management systems such as ISO 14001;
  • Knowledge and understanding of environmental legislation, various local and provincial government laws;
  • Knowledge and understanding of energy conservation, water conservation and waste management practices;
  • A valid driver’s license, computer literacy and basic project management skills;
  • Good organisational and communication skills;
  • Report writing and strong administrative skills;
  • Good facilitation or presentation skills.
