The CSIR has a vacancy for an Enterprise Risk Management Officer in the Enterprise Risk Management Office (ERMO) who will provide professional, efficient and high quality support to the Enterprise Risk Management Office (ERMO) and assist in the implementation, management and improvement of CSIR’s risk management and compliance framework The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring ERMO runs efficiently, coordinating and implementing office procedures, as well as taking responsibility for specific project within ERMO. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

  • Administer the enterprise risk management function including coordinating risk assessment, collating information regarding risks and controls, managing the enterprise risk management database and producing risk management reports and support the administration of the insurance portfolio;

  • Manage various specific risk and governance projects and coordinate any CSIR Governance Fora that may be managed by ERMO;

  • Administer tools used for risk management, compliance management, control self-assessment and surveys;

  • Assist in developing a checklist for and assisting with, all ERM documentation (including, but not limited to assistance with training, analysis, monitoring, and implementation and reporting).

  • Assist the ERMO team with the designing, implementing and administration of risk management and an overall risk register for the organisation;

  • Provide support with the implementation and administration of risk management and other legislative/best practice requirements;

  • Ensure risk processes are in place and highlight areas where process, people and technology may potentially be a risk area for CSIR;

  • In support of the ERMO team, track the implementation of risk treatment plans and compile monthly/quarterly reports for the ERMO. Produce status reports regarding the level of risk associated with any given area of the business;

  • Highlight areas of constraints, areas of improvement and report recommendation to management relating to risk exposure;

  • Handle all asset, vehicle, baggage, medical and liability claims until completed to the satisfaction of the CSIR. Ensure that all claims are reported on time to eliminate the repudiation of claims due to late notification.


Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A National Diploma in risk management or equivalent with three years’ experience in risk management is essential;

  • A Bachelor’s degree in risk management or equivalent with three years’ experience in the implementation and evaluation of risk management will be advantageous;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills;

  • Advanced computer skills and knowledge of ICT systems;

  • Knowledge of enterprise risk management frameworks (ISO 31000 & COSO);

  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks is an advantage;

  • The capacity to multitask and prioritise workload;

  • The ability to work to a high level under extreme pressure;

  • The capacity to work alone or as part of a team;

  • Reliability, honesty and leadership skills;

  • Discretion and respect for confidential information;

  • Meticulous planning and organising capability;

  • Liaison skills with stakeholders at all levels;

  • Goal orientated;

  • Excellent time management skills.
