The role

We are currently seeking an experienced Engineering Surveyor to join our Durban Construction and Pavements team for the Mpiti to Sehlabathebe Road (91 km) Project in Lesotho.

This term contract position will be based at the Mpiti to Sehlabathebe Road (91 km), which starts in the southwest part of Lesotho, near Qacha’s Nek and then runs along the south-eastern boundary with South Africa, ending at the Sehlabathebe National Park. The project entails the upgrading from gravel to asphalt surface. The Works contract commenced in January 2019 and is scheduled to run for a 36-month contract period, which may be extended. SMEC has already appointed one surveyor on site, but due to the size of the site, is seeking a second Engineering Surveyor to carry out the work load. The Engineering Surveyor will work in collaboration/partnership with the current engineering surveyor on site but will report primarily to the Resident Engineer (RE). The Engineering Surveyor will work in collaboration with the Measurement Engineer (for quantities) as well as the Materials Engineer and Senior Materials Technicians (for quality monitoring). He/she will be expected to work without supervision and take ownership and responsibility for the elements of the works which will be under his/her responsibility.

SMEC is seeking to appoint someone who lives up to SMEC’s values of maintaining integrity whilst working with purpose and professionalism and partnering with people from SMEC’s team and Client for the successful completion of the project.

Key Responsibilities

The Engineering Surveyor will be responsible for the following aspects of the monitoring of the Works construction:
• Establishing and maintaining survey control networks for the Contractor to use
• Interpreting design drawings and verification of design data
• Monitoring and verification of all aspects of the Contractor’s survey and setting out for the Works
• Managing the collection, undertaking the verification and maintenance of survey data for the following, in terms of the COLTO General Specifications for Roads and Bridge Works (1998):
o The calculation of quantities for monthly interim and final payment certificates for all aspects of the earthworks, pavement layerworks, stormwater culvert installation and excavation for structures
o Checking that construction of all elements of earthwork, pavement layerworks, culvert installation and civil structures are construction in the correct position, within the specified tolerances
• Maintaining and managing calibration of survey equipment provided through the Works contract
• Surveying and reporting within reasonable time whether each work element and lot submitted by the Contractor for acceptance is within the required dimensional tolerances for acceptance
• Reporting on verification of quantities for inclusion of monthly interim payments certificates to the Measurement Engineer and Resident Engineer
• Resolving survey related discrepancies with the Contractor to maintain quality assurance on site
• Managing the team of survey assistants provided through the Works contract
• Liaising with the engineers and project managers and other key stakeholders
• Compiling as-built information on civil works and be able to produce topographical survey plans in terms of TMH 11
• Assisting Engineer’s team where required to produce ad-hoc surveys and proposals for resettlement or compensation of land owners along the route or realignment of roadworks or stormwater or structures
• Training of trainee surveyors should the SMEC’s Client require an assistant to be trained through the project

Recommended Qualifications, Skills and Experience

The Engineering Surveyor:
• Shall hold, as a minimum, a National Diploma in Surveying or an equivalent qualification with a minimum experience of ten (10) years of which 5 years must have been in roadworks surveying including the abovementioned Key Responsibilities.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must have a valid passport.
• Must have a working knowledge and experience of undertaking the Engineering Surveyor’s Key Responsibilities listed above without the supervision of another surveyor.
• Must be physically fit to undertake the physical work in the field as well as the data processing in the office.
• Must be fluent and must communicate well in spoken and written English.
• Must have a working understanding and experience in roadworks design and setting out data
• Must himself/herself be competent in the use of computers and the following roadworks and survey software.:
o Road Maker, Model Maker & Civil 3D
o Computer aided drawing software
o Microsoft Excel
o Microsoft Word
• Must have excellent problem-solving skills.
• Must be self-motivated with good time management.
• Must take full responsibility and accountability for his own work.
