Position Overview
Samuel Hall seeks an Editorial Officer who can do more than refine text—we need a strategic communicator who can transform research into high-impact outputs tailored for policymakers, donors, and practitioners.
Reporting to the Director of Programmes, the Editorial Officer will play a critical role in strengthening research, policy, and communications work. This role is ideal for someone with policy experience, a strategic mindset, and a deep understanding of development and humanitarian actors across Asia, Africa, and Europe.
📌 Role Type: Part-time (0.8 FTE) – Alternative FTE options can be discussed
📌 Location: Remote, with occasional travel to Nairobi (1-2 times per year)
Key Responsibilities
1. Strengthening Research Communications & Policy Influence
- Shape research reports, briefs, and papers to ensure clarity and alignment with policy stakeholders.
- Strengthen the narrative and framing of research outputs to maximize engagement with targeted audiences.
- Translate complex research findings into accessible, compelling messages while maintaining academic integrity.
- Advise research teams on structuring outputs for strategic impact in policy spaces.
- Enhance Samuel Hall’s voice and credibility in policy discussions.
2. Editing & Refining Research Outputs
- Copy-edit and refine research reports, ensuring clarity, coherence, and adherence to Samuel Hall’s style guide.
- Ensure high editorial standards, including academic referencing and methodological consistency.
- Work closely with senior researchers to shape final outputs before publication.
- Coordinate with clients and partners on the finalization of research reports.
- Manage timelines and workflow for research editing.
3. Editorial Oversight for Communications Outputs
- Refine op-eds, blogs, media messaging, and talking points to strengthen Samuel Hall’s public voice.
- Ensure brand and messaging consistency across external communications.
- Support the communications team in positioning research for external engagement.
- Provide editorial support for proposals, pitches, and strategic documents to enhance clarity and effectiveness.
- Contribute to thought leadership initiatives, helping Samuel Hall shape conversations in the sector.

Requirements
Mandatory Qualifications
🎓 Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism, English, International Relations, or a related field. (Master’s or professional editing qualification is a plus.)
📅 Experience: 3–5 years in editing, content development, or research communications, preferably in policy, development, or humanitarian sectors.
📝 Writing & Editing: Strong ability to refine complex research and policy content for different audiences.
📢 Strategic Communication: Experience shaping research outputs for policymakers, donors, and practitioners.
📊 Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Word, Google Docs, Adobe Acrobat; familiarity with style guides (AP or Chicago). CMS experience is a plus.
🔍 Attention to Detail: Ability to spot inconsistencies, factual errors, and ambiguous phrasing.
🤝 Collaboration: Strong team player, able to work in multicultural, global environments.
⚡ Work Ethic: Ability to manage multiple deadlines, work under pressure, and prioritize tasks effectively.
💡 Proactiveness: Self-motivated, problem-solving mindset, and ability to work independently.
Desirable Qualifications
✔️ Experience with multinational organizations, NGOs, or research institutions focusing on policy, migration, or humanitarian issues.
✔️ Additional language skills (French, Arabic, etc.) are an advantage.
✔️ Knowledge of digital publishing, SEO, and content strategy is a plus.
