ActionAid (AA) is a global movement of people working together to further human rights for all and end poverty.

ActionAid is a global justice federation working to achieve social justice, gender equity and poverty eradication working in 44 countries around the world. ActionAid South Africa (AASA) as a part of the ActionAid International Federation, is a nationally registered civil society organisation, established in 2006. AASA works with people living in poverty and exclusion to build sustainable, people-centered, and just alternatives to injustice and inequality. Guided by feminist analysis and a human rights-based approach, Governed by an Advisory Board of Directors, the organization is currently implementing projects in Limpopo, KwaZulu- Natal, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Main duties and responsibilities may include, but not limited to:
Lead the research on the effects on microcredit on vulnerable populations in rural and urban areas in South Africa.
Keep abreast of national policy developments on economic recovery strategies.
Mainstream feminist analysis through economic recovery strategies
Deepen stakeholder relations with CSOs, organized Labour, Government and Business as well as international development agencies to advance knowledge sharing.
Develop a specific research analysis that can be used to deepen understanding on economic recovery strategies as advocacy for AASA and broader CSOs and social movements.
Lead community driven participative action research.
Contribute regularly to traditional and social media to advance support for economic justice for vulnerable populations.
Advance strategic thinking of linked- up policy interfaces, including around employment generation, sustainable development.
Drive the documentation of contributions to the national policy advances related to microcredit lending in South Africa as a key repository.
Support the initiatives of the AASA’s advocacy and institutional activities.
Identifying research opportunities and partnerships.
Manage the implementation of the research project including programmatic and financial.
Timeous project update and reporting as required for internal and external purposes.
Maintain and update donor communications on project status and or changes.
Participate as a proactive member of the AASA team, attending team meetings and providing advice and support to fellow team members.
Build strong relationships with key stakeholders within the ActionAid community and with Regional and international levels.
Other responsibilities as delegated by the country management team.
Other Requirements:
Foster and promote ActionAid’s approach to overcoming Sexual Harassment, Exploitation, and Abuse (SHEA) and other Safeguarding concerns (including child abuse and abuse of adults at-risk) in policies, practices, programming, stakeholder engagement etc.
Feminist Leadership – champion feminist leadership principles and values including commitment to diversity and inclusion (race, gender, power) as outlined in the top ten basics.
Contribute to a culture of excellence in respect to a team that values experimentation and continuous improvement.
Safeguarding –Ensure ActionAid and sector’s approach to child protection and Safeguarding is embedded holistically in all programmes and interventions.
Key requirements:
Degree in development studies/Social Sciences be it politics, economics, development studies, human rights/constitutional law, or related field. A master’s degree will be advantageous.
Experience of conducting research in either academic or work-related environments.
5 years’ experience in the work experience in research environment associated to socio-economic rights related work in South Africa.
The ideal candidate should have the following skills:
Strong competency in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
Motivated self-starter with initiative, flexibility and enthusiasm
Good organizational and time management skills and the ability to work on several projects at once.
Understanding of gender issues in development and demonstrable commitment to promoting gender equality within the organization and in program work.
Proven experience of Knowledge management.
Proven experience in donor/funder report writing skills.
Advanced experience in using relevant research software etc.
Demonstrated ability to use initiative and take a proactive approach to work.
Communication skills, confidence to speak in public, including through the media, and with stakeholders.
Strong cross-cultural awareness, able to work effectively with diverse working styles.
