Job Description:

Drone Mission Planning and Piloting in implementing areas of Mokhotlong and Thaba Tseka – 60%

  • Carry out any risk assessment and risk mitigation measures before any drone mission/operation, to ensure safety of all stakeholders along the drone’s flight path
  • Check drones before a flight to ensure safe and proper operation
  • Analyze weather forecasts to ensure safe flights
  • Document pre- and post-flight logs
  • Video record all drone take offs and landings and monitor drones during flight
  • With assistance from the team ensure line of sight visibility for a drone
  • Plan drone flight routes
  • Navigate drones along designated paths 
  • Gather information or produce aerial photographs, as needed 
  • Perform equipment testing, troubleshooting, and minor maintenance

Production of maps 10%

  • Downloading of photos and videos into a mapping software for photogrammetry
  • Analyzing photography data with mapping software.
  • Designing maps with geographic data and other data sources.

Facilitate use of the mapping system – 5%

  • Support the M&E and Project Officer in development of maps and interpretation
  • Ensure map guidelines are applied appropriately, 
  • Coordinate mapping processes and activities at the sites / district levels. 

Communicate and utilize mapping data – 5%

  • Collate mapping data from across project implementation areas to ensure donor requirements and targets are met
  • Provide technical support to local programming teams so that they can utilise their mapping data with different stakeholders
  • Support project staff to use mapping data to adapt or refine programme implementation 
  • Provide support to district and national report writing activities.

Facilitate learning and better practices in mapping – 5%

  • Support project teams to design and facilitate reflection and lessons learned sessions in relation to mapping activities 
  • Support local project teams identify bottlenecks in mapping and implement strategies for addressing them

Plan mapping linking them with Community Disaster Preparedness Plans – 5%

  • Determine roles and responsibilities to support the mapping process and communicate these
  • Develop the basic information sheet to clarify and summarize key information from the maps
  • Ensure WV policies on child protection and measurement protocols are clarified and followed faithfully throughout
  • Develop sampling plan and coordinate with field staff to inform relevant community members, including children 
  • Coordinate with field staff and partners to ensure the appropriate timing schedule for mapping and feedback
  • Critically analyze and adapt maps as necessary to respond to field reality

Develop or adapt measurement tools – 5%

  • Develop and/or adapt standard tools in consultation with technical specialists and field staff/partners for drone mappings 

Knowledge management – 5%

  • Facilitate learning from drone piloting and mapping processes
  • ​Facilitate proper management of knowledge through WV and donor systems.
  • Support GIS Analyst in data collation and map analysis

Minimum education, training and experience requirements to qualify for the position:

The following may be acquired through a combination of formal or self-education, prior experience or on-the-job training:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Geography, Surveying, Engineering or related field.
  • Drone piloting certificate from an accredited provider
  • 1-2 years of experience with drone piloting and GIS for an NGO or grant funded project.
  • Direct Drone piloting and GIS experience with grant funded programming.   

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency with drone piloting and usage of mapping software
  • Experience with mapping tools such as PIX4D, PIX4D Mapper, QGIS
  • Experience with GPS measuring tools.
  • Outstanding quantitative skill set.
