Position Details

  • Position: Driver
  • Type: Personal Services Contractor (PSC)
  • Location: Peace Corps Lesotho Office, Maseru
  • Work Schedule: Full-time (minimum 40 hours per week)
  • Contract Duration: Base period with up to four option periods, subject to performance, need, and funding
  • Probationary Period: Four (4) months

Salary

Compensation ranges from LSL 153,193.00 to LSL 245,109.00, negotiable based on salary history and experience.

Eligibility

  • Open to all eligible applicants
  • Preference will be given to candidates residing in Lesotho or citizens of Lesotho
  • Non-citizens must already possess valid work and/or residency permits

Job Purpose

Under the supervision of the DMO, the Driver is responsible for transporting staff, volunteers, and other personnel conducting official Peace Corps business. The role includes ensuring vehicles are properly maintained and operated in accordance with Peace Corps and United States Government (USG) guidelines.

The position also includes logistical and coordination responsibilities during training events and other official activities.

Key Responsibilities

Driving

  • Operate Peace Corps vehicles safely and courteously at all times
  • Drive staff, volunteers, and official visitors as assigned
  • Ensure compliance with traffic laws and safety protocols
  • Maintain accurate mileage logs
  • Ensure vehicles are properly fueled and checked regularly (oil, fluids, tires)
  • Report maintenance issues promptly
  • Perform airport pick-ups and drop-offs
  • Enforce vehicle rules (e.g. no smoking)
  • Ensure passenger safety, including seatbelt use
  • Serve as interpreter for American staff where necessary
  • Remain vigilant when transporting cash-carrying staff
  • Serve as an on-call driver when required

Logistics

  • Assist in collecting supplies and running errands
  • Support staff with loading and unloading goods, equipment, and mail
  • Assist with movement of furniture and equipment
  • Support shipment logistics for volunteers
  • Provide assistance with IT troubleshooting at remote sites where necessary
  • Proactively identify and complete tasks within the Peace Corps compound
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Safety and Security

  • Operate vehicles in accordance with Peace Corps safety standards
  • Report safety and security concerns promptly
  • Support implementation of safety and security policies

Occasional Money Handling

  • Assist in couriering cash or purchase orders as directed
  • Act as intermediary without decision-making authority on procurement

Additional Duties

  • May be assigned additional responsibilities during periods of reduced volunteer presence or special operational needs
  • Support various administrative, operational, or technical functions as required

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must clearly address each requirement in their application:

  • COSC or equivalent
  • At least five (5) years’ professional driving experience, preferably with the US Government
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Valid passport
  • Experience transporting staff
  • Experience working for an organisation with at least 20 employees
  • Fluency in English and Sesotho (written and spoken)
  • Knowledge of local traffic laws and road networks
  • Experience driving in highland areas
  • Knowledge of all districts of Lesotho
  • Experience driving in both Lesotho and South Africa
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to travel for extended or overnight trips on short notice
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Basic mechanical knowledge of vehicles will be an added advantage
