Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job

You will serve as the primary driver for the British High Commission in Maseru. This includes driving the High Commissioner, Country‑Based Staff, and official visitors—sometimes VIPs—to and from appointments in Maseru, across Lesotho, and occasionally into South Africa.

The role requires professionalism, reliability, calmness under pressure, and excellent judgement to ensure the safety and security of passengers.

In addition to driving duties, you will support vehicle maintenance and the smooth running of the High Commission through corporate service duties such as procurement, logistical support, and handling diplomatic mail.


Roles and Responsibilities

1. General Driving and Care of Vehicles (50%)

• Provide transport for staff and visitors, including pickup/drop‑off and transport of goods
• Drive mostly within Maseru, with occasional travel to districts and South Africa
• Maintain an accurate journey log
• Keep the vehicle clean, presentable, and comfortable (including bottled water)
• Conduct daily vehicle checks: tyre pressure, fluids, oil, battery, fuel
• Report any defects promptly
• Oversee servicing, maintenance, insurance, and record‑keeping


2. Administrative Duties and Logistical Support (30%)

• Keep detailed records and receipts for all expenses (fuel, tolls, servicing) and reconcile them in the BHC expense system
• Obtain quotations when needed to ensure value for money
• Assist in logistical preparations for high‑level visits (route planning, recces, schedules)
• Support emergency preparedness and business continuity plans
• Carry out messenger duties, including management of diplomatic bags and delivery of sensitive documents
• Assist with event logistics (setup, break‑down, sourcing goods, managing mailboxes, booking requests)


3. Corporate Services Support (20%)

• Serve as Health & Safety Officer and First Aider
• Conduct health and safety checks per the Property Compliance Assessment (PCA)
• Work closely with Residence & Office Manager on facility maintenance
• Perform weekly electricity checks and manage electricity token purchases
• Monitor generator fuel monthly
• Ensure servicing of air conditioners and fire extinguishers
• Oversee BHC guards as directed by Regional Security Advisor (Pretoria)
• Assist with setup/cleanup after receptions and dinners
• Undertake basic clerical tasks (data entry, updating contact databases, preparing invitations)


Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• Minimum 3 years of verifiable professional driving experience
• Valid and clean driving licence
• Strong knowledge of traffic laws, routes, and key locations in Maseru and Lesotho
• Fluent written and spoken English
• Basic IT skills (Microsoft 365 – Teams, SharePoint, Excel, Word, Outlook)
• Strong communication skills
• Excellent organisational and time‑management skills; strong attention to detail
• Customer service experience and process‑improvement mindset
• Ability to handle multiple responsibilities
• Flexibility to work outside normal hours


Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• Experience driving for an embassy, international NGO, or professional corporate institution (minimum 3 years)
• Basic vehicle maintenance skills
