This role will help us to accelerate and expand our in-house capabilities as we navigate our next evolution of growth. The ideal candidate for this role is a mission-driven visionary with deep expertise in talent management, compensation, benefits, employee relations, compliance, recruitment, and retention. The ideal candidate will have experience leading people operations or human resources in fast-paced non-profits and be personally invested in DEIBJ. At Carbon180, we continually strive to dismantle inequitable systems and prioritize inclusion. The director of people and DEIBJ will lead those efforts. This role will function as a member of the strategy and operations leadership team and will report to the managing director of strategy and operations.

Major Roles and Responsibilities

  • Build the people and DEIBJ team to provide the organization with support and deep technical expertise on talent management, compensation, benefits, employee relations, compliance, recruitment, and retention.
  • Mentor and support the people and DEIBJ team with emotional intelligence. Oversee the team’s performance and effectiveness while also supporting their development and modeling the behaviors the team wants to cultivate in the rest of the organization. This work will require building strong working relationships of co-creation, collaboration, and thought-partnering.
  • Consistently develop and improve internal HR, hiring and onboarding, personnel management systems enabling the C180 team to attract, secure, and maintain high quality team members.
  • Partner with team members to facilitate stellar performance, cultivate a strong culture of accountability, and maintain and enhance our organization’s mission and values-alignment as we grow.
  • Operate with transparency by clearly and regularly reporting to the board and, as appropriate, the organization on key metrics and outcomes of our people and DEIBJ efforts. Proactively create and share clear strategies to address gap areas.
  • Design and lead the implementation of new internal HR systems, procedures, and/or policies to maximize team productivity and flourishing while centering DEIBJ and org values.
  • Partner with the strategy and operations team to ensure organizational alignment on strategic and cultural work. Examples include creating administrative policies or selection of administrative systems with the finance and admin team; conceptualizing appropriate onboarding classes with the learning and organizational development team; and managing organization-wide systems.

  • Extensive experience leading DEIBJ and organizational culture development strategy.
  • People management and change management experience.
  • Ability to comfortably juggle multiple priorities and to lead cross-functional areas.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of DEIBJ principles.
  • Experience conceptualizing and implementing a vision for people and DEIBJ work within an organization.

Who You Are

Our ideal director of people and DEIBJ believes deeply in our mission. Beyond that:

  • You actively seek opportunities to dismantle inequitable systems and other harmful corporate norms, and are eager to learn and grow your DEIBJ literacy.
  • You move fluidly from strategy to execution. You appreciate the big picture and feel inspired to set a bold vision, but you know it’s all in the details. You manage projects fluidly, fiercely prioritize, and track timelines, data, and information in an organized and systematic fashion. You don’t drop balls, miss deadlines, or forget to respond to someone’s inquiry — and you’re not afraid to roll up your sleeves to do the work.
  • You’re a driver of results. You’ve demonstrated the ability to set ambitious goals and achieve them, and you combine your exceptional strategic, analytical, and critical thinking skills with your penchant to make data-informed decisions for impressive outcomes.
  • You’re a systems thinker and creator. You’re unfazed by ambiguity and thrive in situations where you get to build something out of nothing or create order out of chaos. You want to do work that’s never been done before, better than anyone’s ever done it.
  • You effectively collaborate to get things done. A relationship-builder at heart, you work with people to get things done in a mutually beneficial, non-transactional way. You are both warm and motivated. You do the things you say you will do, hold others to account, and support others pursuit of shared goals.
  • You’re high impact, low-ego, and kind to yourself and others. Our core values (see below) resonate with who you are and what you believe.
  • Creative problem solving fires you up. When faced with a mountain, you know there are plenty of ways to climb it. You’re not dissuaded by challenges, but energized, and can build structure out of chaos.

OUR VALUES

At C180, we believe in living by an internal set of core values, which we strive to embody and celebrate in moments big and small.

  • One boat. We work hard to ensure that we are rowing in one direction as a team, aligning our work and resources to shared goals.
  • Pencil to pen. We think critically, do our research, and weigh multiple options. Then, we commit to move to action.
  • Win and lose together. When one of us succeeds, we all win. When we encounter challenges, we determine how best to redirect the energy and resources of the team to solve them.
  • Person in the professional. Our team is composed of real people with real passions, interests, and needs, within and outside of our work. To be our best and most productive selves at work, we believe we need to care for ourselves and others.
  • Make space, share space. We believe in making space for all voices to be heard, within our team and our broader work — particularly and especially voices historically disenfranchised and disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change.
  • Be a window, not a door. We’re committed to transparency, and to shining light on how and why decisions are made. We are honest with one another, ask for clarity, and operate with integrity to build a culture of trust.
  • Grow the braintrust. We are committed to constantly learning, and to staying up to speed on the science of our field. We work to grow our knowledge, sharpen our skills, and to bring great minds to the field of carbon removal.

Studies have shown that marginalized communities – such as women, LGBTQ+, and people of color – are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. If you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to still consider submitting an application. You may be just the right candidate for this role or another one of our openings!

Carbon180 continually seeks to enrich its staff and team culture. In particular, we’re dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We’re also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely different backgrounds can thrive. We’ve adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities.
