The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is seeking a Director of Partnerships and Engagement, who is a dedicated leader in the movement for social and environmental justice. Reporting to the Deputy Director, and a key member of the Executive Team, the Director of Partnerships and Engagement plays a critical role in the success of our growing global initiative.

The call for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is backed by a diverse network of thousands of organisations around the world — including civil society organisations, faith institutions, health professionals, youth activists, academics and Indigenous leaders. Momentum behind the proposal has scaled due to powerful partnerships with frontline communities, movements, civil society networks, think tanks and other allies. We are now looking to further scale this work to build a powerful global network of partners able to secure a negotiating mandate for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty and support a global just transition away from coal, oil and gas.

This senior leadership position has responsibility for managing the Partnerships and Engagement Team, setting ambitious goals, driving results, overseeing our grantmaking, and contributing to the overall strategy of the Treaty Initiative.

This is a full-time position, though Treaty will consider applicants who prefer to work at .8 FTE. Salary is commensurate with experience and adjusted based on location. The total compensation package for this role, including mandated employer-paid pensions if mandated by the country’s labor laws, will be in the range of $100,000 to $120,000 USD.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Partnerships and Engagement Team, through strategic planning, goal-setting and leading the team to success, as well as overseeing budgeting and resourcing, contracting, hiring and strategy. The Director is responsible for performance management, growth and development and team culture.
  • Building the global movement calling for a fair fossil phase out and just transition, through connecting and supporting a diverse range of major institutions and organisations to become more active on calling for a phase out of coal, oil and gas through the negotiation of a Fossil Fuel Treaty
  • Oversee the Treaty Initiative’s engagement with partner organisations, including subgranting, regular check-ins, reporting and coordinating outreach to new potential partners to deepen our engagement across our key constituencies and regions, including with constituencies such as labour, human rights, Indigenous peoples, faith communities and the health sector.
  • Collaborate with the Campaigns, Political and Communications teams in activating partners to engage in key campaign moments and mobilisations to support them to advocate for the negotiation of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty – including through equipping the network with the content, resources and materials they need to actively participate in this global campaign.
  • Coordinate our engagement with major institutions and networks including global climate justice networks, businesses, trade unions, UN agencies and NGOs.
  • Contribute to overall leadership strategy for the Treaty Initiative, primarily as a key member of Initiative’s executive team. Additionally, this role includes presenting key recommendations and advising the broader International Support Team, movement Working Groups and Steering Committee, as required.

Required experience and skills

  • A deep passion for climate justice and supporting an equitable transition to a world without coal, oil or gas.
  • Significant experience in relevant roles in climate change and environmental sectors, or other civil society networks and movements
  • 5+ years management and leadership experience, and strategic planning skills
  • Ability to work irregular hours and manage a diverse, remote and virtual team
  • Experience in relational organising of a network of partnerships and a deep understanding of relational dynamics within the civil society sector
  • Excellent relationship-building, strong interpersonal skills, initiative and written and verbal communication skills.
  • High cultural competency, working in teams across differences, including race, class, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, language fluency, etc.

Desired experience and skills

  • Experience in grantmaking
  • Experience in directed network campaigning, including activating organisations to publicly campaign or engage with policymakers
  • An existing and active network of relationships with civil society organisations and institutions likely to join the Fossil Fuel Treaty campaign
  • Fluency in languages other than English is highly desirable, particularly Spanish
  • Experience working in the Global South
