Description

About Health In Harmony

In a business-as-usual scenario, global temperatures will rise at least 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial averages by 2030, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Without immediate action to prevent this rise, Earth and its diverse ecosystems will face irreversible negative impacts by mid-century.

Health In Harmony is a nonprofit organization working to reverse the deforestation of tropical rainforests as a solution to global heating and nature’s collapse. It does this by Radically Listening™ to Indigenous and Non-Indigenous rainforest communities and then transferring into the hands of these communities the material, technical, and capital resources rainforest people conclude are required to realize their intersectional climate- and biodiversity-critical solutions to reverse Earth’s rainforest loss.

A business-as-usual approach to our global communications and marketing will not facilitate the accomplishment of our social mission. Just as the allocation of HIH resources inside Earth’s rainforests is directed by Indigenous, Traditional, and Local rainforest communities, so too should a substantial portion of HIH’s public communications and marketing be led by and be the voice of people who identify as or can competently represent Indigenous, Traditional, or Local rainforest peoples. Our (first ever) Director of Communications and Marketing will possess a set of communication and marketing skills so solid and sound that you will be able to conduct what could be regarded as more “traditional,” status quo modes of non-profit communication and marketing alongside more anti-colonial, innovative, and paradigm-shifting modes of communication and marketing, such as our nascent Community Thriving Narrative body of communications work.

Health In Harmony started working in Indonesia in 2007, and in 2019, it expanded to Brazil and  Madagascar. In Indonesia, the rainforest peoples directing our work and our investments have reduced the number of logging households surrounding Gunung Palung National Park by 90%, reduced infant mortality by 67%, and protected $65 million worth of above-ground forest carbon. These results were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and gave Health In Harmony the confidence to replicate its model in other rainforests worldwide.

In recent years, Health in Harmony has expanded the magnitude and quality of its public communication, marketing, and advocacy, including a) internally developed video campaigns like Planet Protectors, b) dozens of earned media articles like this one in Pro-Publica, c) repurposing and popularizing our research papers for expanded impact; and d) communications to support the magnified impact of our international advocacy, like this opinion editorial (op-ed). In 2021, our Founder, dr Kinari Webb, published her memoir Guardians of the Trees with the support of the entire organization. Additionally, the level, scope, stakes, and frequency of the HIH team in leading and participating in international events (UNFCCC COP, UNCBD COP, New York Climate Week, ChangeNow, and others) is dramatically expanding. You will possess a track record of leading communications and marketing in a fast-paced, international, cross-cultural setting for ambitious non- and for-profit organizations. You will be comfortable being a representative and spokesperson for HIH in international settings.

In short, our Director of Communications and Marketing will flex their traditional and non-traditional (i.e., anti-colonial, innovative, and paradigm-shifting) talents and ideas to be integral to the organization’s ability to demonstrate to the world the climate- and nature-critical impact of HIH’s unique value proposition:

  1. We center Indigenous Peoples’ and Local Rainforest Communities’ expertise and transfer global resources into their climate- and biodiversity-critical design expertise/ solutions.
  2. Our anti-colonial mindset based on trust and reciprocity flips the narrative.
  3. Our planetary health approach operationalizes intersectionality to expand rainforest ecosystems.
  4. We earn the right to influence and scale our impact through a commitment to evidence-driven investments, using holistic (planetary health) metrics (community thriving, carbon, biodiversity) to limit reporting & accountability burdens on rainforest communities.
