Human Resources Director for Southern Africa

The HR Director is positioned within Volvo Trucks organization in South Africa and has the overall responsibility for the performance of the HR function in Volvo Group South Africa legal entity. It is an important role to ensure effective implementation of HR strategies and processes, and drive initiatives that add value to the Volvo Group and different business units.

In this role, you will oversee and direct the Human Resource Function and activities associated with Organisational Development, Talent Development, Compensation and Benefits, Competence Development, HR Services, and Employee Relations.
You will ensure effective leadership, coordination and general direction to reflect and promote the company’s mission, vision, aspirations and values.

The position is located in: Johannesburg, South Africa

Reporting: This role will report to the Vice President Southern Africa for Volvo Trucks (and President Volvo Group Southern Africa legal entity).
It is a member of Volvo Trucks Southern Africa country management team and country management team (CMT). The position works in close collaboration with Volvo Trucks International HR Community.

Job Objectives

  • Overview and initiate the HR activities across South Africa organization.

  • Liaise with Market Business Strategies to facilitate HR, initiatives, plans & actions as true Business Partners.

  • Develop and administer effective Compensation & Benefits policies that are consistent with global policy and competitively meet the needs of the Organization and its country operations

  • Coach Managers in delivering high level of performance management through continuous dialogue, growth mind-set and effective feedback.

  • Secure a strong Talent Development and Succession planning, building on the leadership bench, as well as providing more exposure in the next levels.

  • Ensure HR service functions such as recruitment, employee administration, payroll, Health, Safety & Environment and BBBEE compliance meet the Policy objectives of the Company and legislative compliance.

  • Strategically direct the labour relations programs to ensure effective and consistent outcomes across business areas which support the business objectives. Ensure effective best management practices, global consistency and legal compliance.

  • Focus on employee engagement through internal surveys and activities as well as external “best company to work for” practices.

  • Ensure training and competence development activities are planned to meet current and future strategic organization needs.

  • Provide efficient and cost-effective HR solutions that enable the market to achieve their business goals and meet their responsibilities. Enable a lean organization.

  • Proactively build and promote strong employee trust and open communication between all levels through the use of Volvo Values, Value-based Leadership, Volvo’s Code of Conduct and Human Rights principles.

Education & Job Experience

  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field

  • Must have more than 10 years significant experience in Human Resource Management within a multi discipline, Industrial and Commercial environment.

  • Must have more than 7 years in HR leadership / management positions

  • Must have good understanding of the retail business & environment within the area of commercial vehicles

  • Must have the ability to work successfully in a global organization and intercultural context.

  • Effective negotiator, Resourceful, Intuitive, action oriented to support the Customer base.

  • Leadership competencies on the level of leading leaders

  • Ability to use human resource management software
