The Mission of the Department of Global Medical Education (GME) is to invest in the power of low- and middle-income health professionals to deliver high-quality cleft and essential pediatric surgical care in their local communities by providing them with critical medical education opportunities.

The Director, Global Medical Education for Women in Medicine will play a pivotal role in shaping Operation Smile’s educational investments in women in the global health care workforce. They will lead a high visibility, high importance initiative to increase the number of women entering, advancing and holding leadership positions in the low- and middle-income country health care workforce by leveraging Operations Smile programs and resources. 

Women in Medicine aims to increase the number and status of women entering, advancing and leading the global health care workforce. This strategy of uplifting women in global health is imperative to accomplishing the sustainable development goals of achieving universal health access, gender equality, reducing poverty, reducing inequities, quality education, decent work conditions, sustainable communities and infrastructure strengthening. Women in Medicine objectives and activities are built on a base of field research on the experiences and perceptions of women in global medicine an developed through a highly intentional human centered design process. The four pillars of action for Women in Medicine are: 

  1. Increased educational opportunities for women and girls 
  2. Intensive mentorship opportunities such as those provided in women centered surgical programs 
  3. Continued research on gender inequities in the global healthcare workforce and global research community 
  4. Continued contribution as a thought leader advancing the status of women in global medicine. 

The Director, Global Medical Education for Women in Medicine will play a pivotal leadership role defining, piloting implementing and improving interventions to accomplish the above stated aims. They will represent Operation Smile and the Women in Medicine program at an international level. They will lead a multidisciplinary, global project team and be responsible for managing the budget, reporting activities, measuring impact and pursuing continued funding for the project. They will be expected to not only lead, but through mentorship and their personal career be an example of the high potential represented by investment in health professionals in low-income countries.

They will influence, adapt and implement educational products, programs and initiatives offered by Operation Smile’s to advance the capacity and capability of women patient families, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, biomedical engineers, comprehensive service providers including nutrition, speech and psychosocial providers. The Director of Global Medical Education establish, develop and maintain key partnerships with funders, professional, educational and non-profit organizations in the region to uplift and advance the status of women in the global health care workforce. They will serve in-country Operation Smile teams to assess the educational needs, plan educational programming and measure and evaluate the impact of educational investments as relevant to the Women in Medicine program aims. 

Operation Smile acknowledges that while talent is universal, educational opportunity is not always equitable. The Director of Global Medical Education will be central in adapting Operation Smile’s high caliber educational offerings to the specific needs, strengths and challenges of women in low-income health care settings.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership & Strategy

  • Reporting to the Vice President of Global Medical Education take responsibility for refining, improving and implementing Women in Medicine’s strategy to elevate the status of women in the global workforce.
  • Serve on the Global Medical Education Department Leadership team, advising the Vice President and Associate Vice President of GME on strategy and contributing to the nurturing of the overall team and communication to internal Operation Smile organization and external stakeholders.
  • Be a leader among peers for the GME Leadership team, facilitating communication, coordination and strategic implementation across work teams as well as guiding and influencing strategic planning.
  • Oversee and Mentor up to four team members at the management level. Ensure that they are executing their work duties and developing their work portfolios as expected. Assist in their personal and professional development. Contribute to a transparent, proactive and positive work culture.
  • Oversee Women in Medicine strategy, planning, implementation, quality improvement, measurement and reporting as well as funding.
  • Monitor and report progress on Department wide goals or Objectives and Key Results.
  • Liaise with leadership of other departments within Operations Smile, Partner funding countries, Funding partners and other key partnerships.
  • Act as an ambassador for both Operation Smile and the Department of Global Medication. Manage international partnerships with key public and private entities. Represent GME’s mission and interests at bilateral and multilateral meetings, as a thought leader, change maker and philanthropic interest.

Customer Service Delivery – locally driven, internationally supported.

Children and the families of children with unmet surgical needs, especially those living with a Cleft condition are at the center of Operation Smile’s legacy and current work. GME invests in those LMIC providers who can deliver the exceptional care patients and their families deserve closest to their homes. Our customers are OS Country Teams on the ground who with GME support plan and implement GME educational activities and investments.  

The Director, GME for Women in Medicine must model impeccable fidelity to these interests and demonstrate responsive service to these entities.

  • Interpret the health workforce educational needs of countries and the hub and spoke sites within them.
  • Prioritize investments in the global health workforce according to local leadership.
  • Communicate and sell GME offerings that serve local needs and elevate the status of women.
  • Work closely with regional, country teams during Annual Planning and Budgeting to plan GME activities each fiscal year.
  • Collaborate with regional and country teams, local and international health care providers, and partner hospitals to implement, evaluate and continuously improve implementation of GME activities, especially through the lens of women in global health.

Oversight and Management 

  • Supervise the team and manage overall project. 
  • Assess quality and timeliness of deliverables.
  • Lead continuous QI efforts to improve upon GME offerings.
  • Help spearhead the design, prototyping and testing of new offerings to address unmet needs.
  • Manage project budgets and monthly variance reports with support from leadership team
  • Ensure travel, safety and logistical needs are met by Operations team or otherwise planned internally.

Development

  • Identify and respond to appropriate funding and collaboration activities for Women in Medicine.
  • Work closely with development and partner countries to fund GME activities and investments in women in the LMIC health workforce. 

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Facilitate the evaluation and reporting of Women in Medicine activities.
  • Ensure the integrity of activity calendars and reporting dashboards.
  • Be responsible for reporting required by other Operation Smile departments, funders and countries
  • Help model and measure impact.
  • Report out best practices.
  • Contribute to annual reporting of activities and impact. 

Requirements

Work experience 

  • Advanced degree in Medicine, International Development, Public Health, Doctoral level preferred.
  • 5+ years of leadership and team management experience advancing public health goals in a low resource health setting.
  • Experience teaching, mentoring and leading health care professionals in low resource settings.
  • Demonstrated thought leadership in advancing women in the health workforce on a regional or global stage.
  • Familiarity with the challenges faced by women, specifically first-generation medical providers and providers from low-income families of origin within low and middle income countries to entering and advancing in the medical profession.
  • Experience mentoring and advocating for representation of women in health leadership positions.
  • Project management and budget management experience of a large portfolio of programs
  • Experience designing, managing, and monitoring programs, especially in low-and-middle income countries. 
  • Background medical education, articulate about the potential of women to meet global health challenges and fuel local capacity-building.
  • Cross-cultural communication abilities 
  • Knowledge of recommended practices, research, and literature to advance healthcare providers skills, especially through innovative solutions.
