Background

Etafeni (also known as the Etafeni Day Care Centre Trust – EDCCT) (www.etafeni.org) is a multi-use facility that delivers a variety of educational and social welfare programs as well as outreach programs to under-served communities in Nyanga and its surrounding areas, in Cape Town. Etafeni originally served as a response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic which continues to be rampant in these areas. The Centre offered services to families affected by HIV/AIDS, most specifically to women and vulnerable children infected and affected by the AIDS epidemic. Since its inception in 2001, Etafeni has evolved to encompass a more holistic approach, serving the diverse needs of the communities of Nyanga and the surrounding areas, while maintaining a special focus on women and children.

Etafeni operates a multi-purpose day care centre and a range of outreach services, providing education and well-being services to support families and children affected by HIV. Its 7 programmes employ over 80 staff and include a preschool, afterschool care, a ‘PowerGirls’ programme, a nutrition programme, a social work programme, the ‘Fit for Life, Fit for Work’ programme, and a health programme.

Based in Nyanga, Cape Town, Etafeni seeks to fill the following vacancy:

DIRECTOR

The Director of Etafeni will report directly to the Board of Trustees and will provide overall administrative, operational and stakeholder management leadership for Etafeni and its related outreach services.

She/He will be responsible to the Board for the Vision and Mission of the organization and delivering the organizational strategy, have overall fiduciary responsibility, coordinating the support services team, supporting the senior programme manager and providing motivational leadership for Etafeni’s staff. 

The Director will be responsible for ensuring delivery of the following key outputs:
Accountability to the Board for ensuring that the Mission and Vision of the organisation are translated into strategy and operations.
Overall responsibility for the smooth and effective running of Etafeni.
Management and mentoring of senior staff.
Overall responsibility for the financial wellbeing of the organisation.
Overall responsibility for the HR portfolio, including systems for performance management.
Overall responsibility for the ongoing sustainability of the organisation and for all fundraising activities.
Responsible for the organisation’s reputation, ensuring that the organisation is well represented to all stakeholders, donors, potential partners, etc.
The Director must meet the following criteria:
Matric; Tertiary education in Management, Social Sciences, or Community Development.
At least 5 years of working experience in the management field in the NGO sector.
Must be a forthright individual with good interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational and administration skills.
Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
Good time-keeping and ethical work practices.
Ability to communicate and transfer skills to the community.
Excellent communication skills in Xhosa and English.
Driver’s licence.
Own car is preferable.
Good understanding of the NGO environment.
