Dean, Lesotho Undergraduate Medical Education Programme (MBChB)
Organisation: Lesotho Boston Health Alliance (LeBoHA), a registered higher education institution in Lesotho
Reports To: Executive Director, LeBoHA
Location: Maseru and Leribe, Lesotho (primary); regular travel within Lesotho and region required
Status: Full-time, salaried (competitive); includes protected administrative time. Eligible for Academic Appointment at Boston University Avedisian and Chobanian School of Medicine (USA) and McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario (Canada)
Position Summary
The Dean provides academic, intellectual, and administrative leadership of the Lesotho Undergraduate Medical Education (MBChB) Programme, and promotes strategic vision and operational execution.
As the chief academic and administrative officer for the programme, the Dean ensures excellence of the programme’s teaching and research, and implements the socially accountable mission to produce physicians prepared to improve the health of all the people of Lesotho.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership and administrative experience, strong scholarly visibility, and a high level of personal and professional commitment, enthusiasm, integrity and pride in the programme and its mission.
Responsibilities
The following describe the primary duties and responsibilities of the Dean:
Academic Leadership & Curriculum
- Lead ongoing curriculum development, alignment with national health priorities, and evidence-based educational methods
- Maintain accreditation standards and regulatory compliance of the Lesotho Medical, Dental and Pharmacy Council (LMDPC) and Council on Higher Education (CHE)
Faculty & Staff Development
- Recruit, mentor, and retain a diverse, qualified faculty, department chairs, and administrators
- Oversee appointment, promotion, and performance review processes for faculty and staff
Quality & Compliance
- Oversee programme quality assurance processes and monitor key educational benchmarks (graduation rates, exam pass rates, clinical competency outcomes)
Research & Scholarship
- Enhance an applied research agenda to address national health needs
- Support faculty grant development to increase external research funding that inform clinical practice and policy
Clinical Services & Community Engagement
- Maintain strong clinical education sites and partnerships with hospitals, the Lesotho Ministry of Health, and community organizations
Administration, Finance & Resource Development
- Provide fiscal leadership for program budgets, resource allocation, and operational efficiency
- Implement an effective management structure and team to oversee effective utilization of financial, human, and physical resources
- Lead fundraising and partnership-building with donors, alumni, and development agencies
Required Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
- MD, MBChB/MBBS, or equivalent medical degree; PhD or advanced degree in the health sciences
- Academic credentials meriting appointment as Associate or Full Professor (or equivalent)
- Clinical registration or eligibility to register for medical licensure with the Lesotho Medical, Dental and Pharmacy Council (LMDPC)
- Excellent communication skills and commitment to social accountability and equity
- Fluency in English; knowledge of Sesotho is advantageous
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in low-resource or sub-Saharan African contexts
- Proven leadership experience and successful fundraising track record
- Demonstrated experience with accreditation, curriculum design, and faculty development
- Experience with health systems strengthening, Ministry of Health collaboration, and donor-funded programs
Terms & Conditions
- Contract length: 5 years, renewable
- Clinical consulting practice permitted up to 20% time
