JOB TITLE : COURT INTERPRETER

GRADE :F

RESPONSIBLE TO : ASSISTANT REGISTRAR

JOB SUMMARY:
The incumbent is responsible for interpretation or translation of court proceedings.

MAIN DUTIES

  1. Interprets court proceedings in both official languages namely (Sesotho and English).
  2. Translate records and correspondences submitted in court from/ into both official languages.
  3. Provides file documents so that interpreters may review a case before going to court.
  4. Reads written material, such as legal documents, scientific works or news reports and rewrite material into specified language according to established rules for grammar.
  5. Build up specialist vocabulary banks.
  6. Establish rapport between the litigants.

30B SPECIFICATION
Bachelor’ degree in Translation or Interpretation
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• Extensive knowledge and experience in interpretation or translation
■ Good communication skills
• Encyclopaedic knowledge

• Ability to work under pressure
Research skills

RESPONSIBILITY

For work of others: Average

For property: Minimal
For effect of Errors: The incumbent is responsible for all errors committed in the execution of his/her duties.

COMPLEXITY
Authority for decision making: The incumbent has the authority to make decision in the execution of his/her job.
Problem solving: The incumbent has to be capable of decisively dealing with problems arising from offices under his/her supervision, clients, misconduct of staff and resolving conflicts.
Supervision received: The incumbent is expected to work independently and report to the Assistant Registrar.

EFFORT

Mental effort: The job requires a high level of concentration in the understanding and use of applied language.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Hazards: HAZARDS: Likelihood of attack by dissatisfied individuals.
Likelihood of prosecution. Serious inevitable trauma on the interpreter particularly when death sentence is being delivered.
Sometimes must work awkward hours and even on holidays where/when need arises.
