Applications are invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following vacant positions tenable at the Judiciary:

DEPARTMENT: Mohale’s Hoek

JOB TITLE: Court Interpreter

RESPONSIBLE TO: Assistant Registrar


JOB SUMMARY

The incumbent is responsible for the interpretation and translation of court proceedings.


MAIN DUTIES

  1. Interprets court proceedings in both official languages (Sesotho and English).
  2. Translates records and correspondence submitted in court from/into both official languages.
  3. Provides file documents to interpreters so they may review a case before going to court.
  4. Reads written material, such as legal documents, scientific works, or news reports, and rewrites the material into the specified language according to established rules of grammar.
  5. Builds up specialist vocabulary banks.
  6. Establishes rapport between the litigants.

JOB SPECIFICATION

Bachelor’s degree in Translation or Interpretation.


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in interpretation or translation
  • Good communication skills
  • Encyclopaedic knowledge
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Research skills

RESPONSIBILITY

For work of others: Average
For property: Minimal
For effect of errors: The incumbent is responsible for all errors committed in the execution of his/her duties.


COMPLEXITY

Authority for decision making:
The incumbent has the authority to make decisions in the execution of his/her duties.

Problem solving: Minimal

Supervision received:
The incumbent is expected to work independently and report to the Assistant Registrar.


EFFORT

Mental effort:
The job requires a high level of concentration in the understanding and use of applied language.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Hazards:

  • Likelihood of attack by dissatisfied individuals
  • Likelihood of prosecution
  • Serious emotional trauma, particularly when a death sentence is being delivered
  • May be required to work awkward hours and even on holidays where/when the need arises
