JOB TITLE: COUNSELLOR (Economic)

JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Head of Mission or Minister Counsellor, s/he has responsibility to cover International Organizations and countries of accreditation dealing with economic and trade matters. S/he monitors and participates in trade negotiations within the areas of responsibility, and initiates economic cooperation between Lesotho and regional/international organizations and countries of accreditation. S/he also advises on positions to take during negotiations/meetings.
MAIN DUTIES
TRADE/ECONOMIC
- Monitors regional and international trade trends and prepare state of play reports.
- Participates in trade negotiations and meetings.
- Provides advice on positions that Lesotho has to take.
- Initiates cooperation between Lesotho and International Organizations.
- Facilitates participation of Lesotho in trade and economic related Forum and Expos.
- Coordinates implementation of trade/economic Agreements.
- Promotes and protects Lesotho’s trade/economic interests.
- Represents Lesotho in regional/international and other trade groupings.
- Acts as a focal point on trade/economic issues for Lesotho.
OTHER DUTIES
- Assists in technical and administrative work of the Mission.
- Provides protocol services.
- Prepares operational work plans, budgets and reports.
- Performs any other related duties assigned by the Head of Mission and/or Minister Counsellor.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Education and Training
- Master’s degree in Economics or Political Science or Law plus three (3) years’ experience in trade/economic related field.
- Bachelor’s degree in Economics or Political Science or Law, plus five (5) years’ experience in trade/economic related field.
Other necessary Knowledge
- Knowledge of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations
- Ability to preside over technical meetings
