Council of Europe’s Call for Participants: Training workshop “ALTERNATIVES” at the Mediterranean University on Youth & Global Citizenship, Tunisia

The Council of Europe’s Youth Department, in cooperation with the North South Centre and the national campaign committees of the No Hate Speech Movement in Morocco and Tunisia,is organising a training workshop “ALTERNATIVES -Countering hate speech and injustice through dialogue and human rights education” in framework of the 7th Mediterranean University on Youth and Global Citizenship (MedUni).

The university will be held in Hammamet, Tunisia, from 9 to 16 June.The Mediterranean University on Youth and Global Citizenship is an activity facilitated and coordinated by the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe in partnership with l’Observatoire National de la Jeunesse (ONJ, Tunisia)and other youth serving organisations from Europe and the Southern Mediterranean, within the Network on Youth and Global Citizenship.

The Mediterranean University on Youth and Global Citizenship is a framework event where different youth-led and youth-oriented organisations have the possibility to run their own activities within a multilateral cooperation context,which encourages networking, peer education, design of common advocacy strategies and sharing of knowledge and opportunities.

Since 2013, the MedUni represents an opportunity to explore the concept of global education and global citizenship, to encourage dialogue between decision makers and young people, to advocate for youth participation and to empower young people towards their rights and duties.

Aims and objectives:

The workshop will explore the current issues in relation to hate
speech and human rights and develop the competences of youth and human
rights activists to combat hate speech, with special regard to support
Mediterranean youth work and Euro-Arab youth cooperation.

Specific objectives of the training include:

–    To support peer learning and develop the capacity of activists and youth leaders active in the No Hate Speech youth campaigns in Morocco and Tunisia through human rights education based on the manuals We Can! and Bookmarks and in the context of the UNSCR 2250  the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16: “peace, justice and strong institutions”
–    To facilitate the meeting and consultation of participants with a group of experts in related topics and the possible prospect of the creation of a regional “Think Tank” on hate speech and human rights in the region

Requirements:

Participants should:

a)come from Tunisia, Morocco or a member state of the Council of Europe or state signatory of the European Cultural Convention

b)be between 18 to 30 years of age

c)be able to work in French, a knowledge of English is an asset

d)be involved in a youth work project related to the No Hate Speech Campaign

e)be able to share their experiences and ideas and be motivated to take full part in the MedUni, the training and the Quadrilogue seminar

The Council of Europe welcomes applications from all young people and youth leaders who fulfil the specific criteriaof this call irrespective of gender, disability, marital or parental status, racial, ethnic or social origin, religion, belief or sexual orientation.

Working language

The working language of the training workshop will be French (predominantly). English may be used occasionally, while Arabic will be used in specific break-out sessions.The official working language of the MedUni’s Joint Programme is English, therefore simultaneous interpretation will be provided for plenary sessions.

Methodology

The programme will be a combination of workshops based on non-formal learning, working groups for networking and sharing good practices and learning about the overall themes of the MedUni.

The human rights education approach presented in the Compass manual and the content of other publications such as manuals We Can! and Bookmarks will be relied on in the training.

The programme will also offer considerable space for the participants to discuss strategic issues related to the campaigns in Morocco and Tunisia and the cooperation with the youth sector of the Council of Europe.
