About the role:
We have an exciting entry-level opportunity for a Corporate Accountability Research Associate to join the RAID team. This post is at the heart of our collaborative team, where you’ll be providing support to senior researchers across RAID’s work.
If you have a keen interest in corporate accountability and human rights, we want to hear from you – particularly if you hold an advanced degree in law, environmental studies, or a similar academic subject in this broad field. This is a unique opportunity to be actively involved in ground-breaking research seeking to hold corporations to account for environmental and human rights harms.
Key tasks:
- Assist in conducting research and monitoring on business and human rights issues relating to RAID’s work.
- Help to provide analysis on cases and situations that RAID is undertaking, working closely with RAID’s experts.
- Assist to collect and analyse information from a wide variety of sources including governments, diplomats, security forces, court documents, legal experts, corporate publications, financial statements, media, journalists, academia, NGOs, victims, witnesses, and others.
- Provide support to field investigations, specifically on information gathering, analysis and assessment of relevant human rights concerns expressed by affected communities, whistleblowers and other stakeholders.
- Provide support to RAID’s work within civil society coalitions and help to support local activists and RAID’s partners to ensure our work complements their efforts.
- Help to write or contribute to the drafting and publicization of compelling reports, briefing and position papers, letters, news releases, op-eds and similar documents.
- Provide assistance to advance and support our communications and social media work.
About you:
You will bring enthusiasm, multi-tasking skills and self-motivation alongside a keen interest in business and human rights, corporate accountability, and environmental issues, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.
The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in human rights, law, environmental law, international relations, political science, social sciences or related subjects, with a demonstrated interest in corporate accountability. You will have at least 1 year of relevant experience, such as internships, volunteering or legal trainee programs. Previous experience working with civil society in Africa and/or environmental issues will help set you apart from the crowd.
We are seeking someone who:
- brings strong analytical and research skills, as demonstrated through desk-based research and academic studies;
- has a proven interest in human rights, business and human rights, the environment, and justice issues;
- is a team player, but who can work independently;
- is fluent in English and has working-level French at a minimum, with strong research and writing skills in English;
- brings knowledge of human rights law and/or environmental issues law through academic study, work experience or other learning;
- and is looking to learn and grow with RAID.
Our team collaborates virtually with flexible working hours. We have offices in Highbury, North London, for the use of team members based in London, and to host in-person team meetings on a periodic basis. We will consider candidates based anywhere in the European or African time zone, and strongly encourage applications from recently graduated law students in Africa.
