Control Room Operator ( P12 )

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The incumbent in this position is responsible for the safe operation of the paper machine through the Distributed Control System (DCS) to ensure that the process delivers the optimum quality at maximum productivity.

REPORTING TO: Foreman: Paper

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE

  • Operation of process through the Distributed Control System according to best operating practices (BOP) and ISO standards.
  • Sets up process according to specific grade.
  • Ensures all control loops are in control at all times.
  • Responsible for all documentation control, check sheets, SAP notifications and chemical consumption logging.
  • Log and record all alarms and communicate process control problems to machine man and engineering staff.
  • Responsible for monitoring quality feedback from QC Lab, via Sappi Logsheet Information System (LIS), and adjusting accordingly.
  • Responsible for effective shift handovers.
  • Assists with correction and writing of BOPs.
  • Responsible for enhancing machine run ability via process optimization and continuous improvement.
  • Involved in Root Cause Analysis (5 Whys).
  • Carries out machines start-ups, shut-downs, clothing changes, grade changes & trail-threading.
  • Carries out Boil–out on machine.
  • Responsible for communication to pulp mill/ boilers/ stores and coater / Suppliers / Customers and adjusting accordingly.
  • Perform all tasks as requested by the Foreman.
  • Act as machine man when required.

SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT & QUALITY COMPLIANCE (SHEQ)

  • Understand & comply with all SHEQ requirements of the job.
  • Carries out BBS Observations
  • Identify and take corrective action in terms of SHEQ conditions and hazards.
  • Maintains a high level of good housekeeping in the workplace at all times
  • Adheres to environmental policy and procedures including
    • Waste reduction
    • Spill prevention
    • Meets environmental targets that apply to his sphere of influence
    • Complies with hazardous chemical handling procedure

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • N3 Pulp & Paper or NQF Level 4 Paper/Board or NCV L3 Pulp and Paper certificate
  • At least three (3) years working experience in a manufacturing industry preferably in paper production
  • Computer Literate (MS Office) with SAP being advantageous
