Consultant: Project Coordinator for The Iris Project
Global Greengrants Fund UK is seeking a consultant to support The Iris Project with the day-to-day management of their grant-making programme to enable young people all over the world to protect and restore nature.
Type: Fixed-Term Consultancy Contract (12 months)
Probation Period: 3 months
Location: This role will be based remotely. Consultants should have flexibility in their working hours. This position is 100% remote and open to candidates worldwide. While working hours are flexible, candidates should be available between 9:30 am and 5:00 pm within the GMT+0 to GMT+7 time zone to align with our team based in Europe and Asia.
Consultancy Start Date: January 2024
Proposed Fee: £100 per day for up to 3 days a week (based on 7 hour working day)
Contractual arrangements: The Iris Project Project Coordinator will be contracted as a consultant with Global Greengrants Fund UK
Reports into: Director of The Iris Project
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, but we will likely close the application round on Thursday, 30th November. Ideally, interviews will take place in December, with the consultancy beginning mid-January 2024, with flexibility depending on the candidate’s needs. THE IRIS PROJECT:
In partnership with Global Greengrants Fund, The Iris Project launched in March 2022 with the aim of lifting up young environmentalists between the ages of 14 – 24 as they work to protect and restore nature where they live. Through a global, annual award, we offer trust-based and flexible funding, mentorship and capacity building to individuals or groups. We are building a community of young leaders with the motivation, confidence and resources to deliver tangible change.
The Iris Project is led by youth, for youth, and is run by a paid and inclusive Advisory Panel and team, all aged 30 or younger. Our youth advisory panel is made up of seven climate activists from Nepal, Nigeria, Liberia, Indonesia, Brazil, Costa Rica and Macedonia. Our overarching aim is to provide the evidence base needed to prove that trust-based investment in young people’s solutions for nature and climate is an invaluable tool when it comes to tackling the climate crisis.
CONTEXT:
We are looking for a proactive, passionate and highly organised Project Coordinator to join our small, purpose-driven team and support the day-to-day running of The Iris Project, and support our mission to protect and restore nature and the lives of those working to defend it. The consultant must have a demonstrable interest in nature restoration and an appreciation of the intersectional nature of the global youth environmental movement. They must be as comfortable communicating with Iris Prize winners and runners-up as they are with Steering Committee members and donors and be willing to pitch in and support project delivery in whichever format that might take (ranging from writing fundraising applications to designing strategic communications and planning events).
You’ll offer flexible support in running The Iris Project, from Iris Prize outreach to monitoring, evaluating, learning, and communicating with grantees to assess their project impact.
A typical day could involve communicating with the advisory panel, facilitating runners-up group mentorship sessions, liaising with shortlisted applicants as part of our due diligence processes, liaising with nominating partners, and drafting evaluation reports. We’re looking for consultants who thrive on challenges, have an active interest in the youth-environment movement and can work confidently under their own initiative. The role is varied and fast-paced.

RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:
- Update and maintain The Iris Project’s contact database and mailing lists.
- Oversee the Iris Prize application process, working with the Advisory Panel to secure and review applications and with the judging panel to finalise the applicant shortlist and select and announce prize winners.
- Work with the Director to oversee support of Iris Prize winners and runners-up, including delivery of bespoke capacity-building programmes.
- Work with the Director to oversee impact evaluation framework and monitoring, evaluation and learning.
- Support nominating partners and advisory panel members with Iris Prize outreach.
- Build supportive relationships with prize runners-up through co-facilitating monthly group mentorship sessions.
- Connect with and collaborate with partners and organisations on campaigns or events to raise the profile of The Iris Project and prize.
- Feed into The Iris Project strategy and help improve our ways of working.
- Work with The Iris Project team to review prize applications to create a shortlist for the judging panel.
- Manage the administrative and financial management for grantees. Coordinate with the Global Greengrants grants management team on prize winner and runners-up due diligence.
- Staying up-to-date on the youth climate funding discourse, including reports and opinion pieces, and building these into The Iris Project communications plan.
CONSULTANT PROFILE:
- The ideal consultant will have experience in movement-building, conservation and/or climate organising.
- Proactive and able to work on own initiative with a particular interest in operations and administration.
- Clear, concise and accurate written and verbal communication skills, and committed attention to detail.
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders to deliver impact-focused projects (ideally in the environment and/or youth space)
- Good interpersonal skills and a team player.
- Able to work under pressure and manage multiple projects at once
- Experience in written reports, meeting deadlines and achieving targets.
- Be familiar with tools such as Canva and Notion.
- Fluency in written and spoken English
