The Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) is the world’s largest network on research on violence against women and violence against children, providing a space where global role players in the field connect with one another, share and promote their research, work to influence policies and improve the lives of those who have experienced violence driven by gender inequality. We do this through funding research, strengthening research capacity, promoting partnerships and influencing change. The SVRI became an independent organisation in 2019. It is incorporated as a non-profit organisation under South African law (SVRI NPC 2019/197466/08) having spun out of the SAMRC. The new Strategic Plan for the period 2020 – 2024 was launched in October 2019.
Sexual Violence Research Initiative seeks to appoint a Consultant to be based in South Africa.
In order to fulfil the mandate of our membership base, effectively implement the strategic plan, and secure the long-term sustainability or the organization, the SVRI is seeking the services of a qualified consultant or consultants to develop a comprehensive resource mobilisation strategy that will take into account the current global donor landscape, identify new actors, explore new funding modalities, and outline a strategic approach to leveraging existing and new partnerships, as well as make recommendations on how to diversify our resource base.
The objective of the consultancy is to develop a resource mobilisation strategy and establish a clear overview of current and potential funding opportunities for the SVRI to increase the long-term sustainability of the organization.
Review the SVRI’s current strategic plan; work plan; project proposals, knowledge management products and funding model to better understand the needs and help position the organisation for resource mobilisation.
Consult with the SVRI team to understand the vision, mission and focus areas of the organisation.
Map the SVRI products and services to identify funding gaps.
Conduct a comprehensive analysis of potential donors worldwide based on geographic interest and thematic funding and assess the feasibility of securing multiyear and thematic funding.
Map donors’ strategic areas of interest and explore opportunities for partnerships from emerging donors working in low- and middle-income countries and private sector foundations.
Develop a plan to engage new donors (traditional and non-traditional).
Develop objectives for fundraising, methods, strategies and focus (bilateral, private sector, public funding, foundations).
Recommend strategies to develop and maintain strategic partnerships and engagement with key donors.
Draft master fundraising proposals based on past proposals and aligned with the new strategic plan.
Develop a series of fundraising materials (print and digital) to secure funding/raise the profile of the SVRI, including website content.
Develop fundraising guidelines.
A comprehensive resource mobilisation strategy that includes an overview of the situation, a critical analysis of past fundraising experience, explores future opportunities and strategies, and outlines a time-bound action plan to systematically research and raise funds.
An annex that maps donor interests worldwide – particularly in LMICs – priorities, funding windows, typical funding amounts, focal points, samples of successful project applications, and points to clear actions that should be taken to mobilise resources and develop and maintain relationships with donors.
A series of fundraising materials, both print and digital, including website content.
Master proposals to potential donors (number to be determined).
Institutional fundraising guidelines.
Required education, experience and competencies:
Advanced university degree in Social Sciences, Development, Planning, Business Administration, Communication, or a related field.
At least ten years global experience in the development sector – preferably on gender equality and VAW issues – and proven experience and success in developing business models and mobilising funds for civil society and international non-governmental organisations.
Excellent knowledge of key donors focused on LMICs.
Experience of working in multicultural contexts.
Strong analytical, strategic thinking and planning skills and ability to work under tight deadlines.
Proficiency in English. Working knowledge of Spanish and French would be an advantage.
Preference will be given to consultants from LMICs.

A budget specifying the daily rate of the consultant (s) and the total number of days proposed for the consultancy. Unless the consultant/s are based in South Africa, the budget should be provided in USD.

The proposal and supporting documents must be submitted in English.
Candidates will be invited to a video conference interview at the end of the technical evaluation process to assess the consultant’s understanding of the ToR. The time frame for the deliverables will be discussed and agreed with the selected consultant after the review of the proposed methodology.
