PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Reporting to the health and safety Manager, the Health and Safety Officer will oversee the development, implementation and maintenance of the health and safety management systems, policies, and standards of construction activities on the mine in line with legal requirements for the projects.


EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & RELATED EXPERIENCE
• Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental Health Science. At Minimum SAMTRAC/ NEBOSH certificate or equivalent.
• Driver’s License (Code B)
• 2 years’ experience in Mining Environment or a medium to large enterprise.
• Registration with Department of Labour as a Health and Safety practitioner will be added advantage.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
• Monitor and ensure Safety & Health Compliance to national legislation and or regulation, international standards, and best practices with the objective of ensuring that all reasonable and proper measures are taken to protect the safety and health of management, workforce staff, clients, and visitors at the construction site.
• Advise and initiate construction safety precautions and programs to conform to all applicable Health and Safety laws, and specifications.
• Assist the contractor to develop, implement, and monitor compliance to Safety & Health Policies, processes, and Codes of Practice to establish acceptable standards of safety outputs and performance.
• Ensure that all measures necessary for maintaining proper personal hygiene, ensuring safety of persons and property, and protecting the environment are taken at a construction area.
• Oversee the adequacy, stability and safety of all construction works.
• Ensure that HSE incidents are established and maintained, and that construction incidents register is developed.
• Assist in investigation and reporting of all personal injury accidents occurring to staff and/or visitors to the appropriate senior official, and to assist in the investigation of all accidents/incidents that result in substantial damage to Company vehicles and other fixed and moveable property.
• Ensure that risk assessments are developed and reviewed for construction activities.
• Conducts Health and Safety audits of construction activities.
• Provide support on Health and Safety awareness at all levels within the construction.
• Aid in developing and compiling safety induction manuals and advise on revisions.
• Review compiled Health and Safety performance reports by the contractor.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
• Risk Assessment, Incident Management and HACCP Principles.
• Knowledge and application of Mining principles and legislation relating to HSE
• Up to date knowledge of legal compliance, legislation etc.
• Computer literacy
• Report writing skills
