Ndifuna Ukwazi is an activist organisation and law centre that promotes the realisation of constitutional rights and social justice through providing organising, research and legal support and representation to poor and working-class people, communities and social movements. We work to advance urban land justice in Cape Town through the protection and expansion of access to affordable housing; supporting tenants’ rights and security of tenure in both private and public housing; towards building a more just and equal city. Ndifuna Ukwazi works closely with Reclaim the City, a social movement of residents living and working in Cape Town’s inner city and surrounding areas.

We are looking for a passionate, committed individual with strong organising skills to join Ndifuna Ukwazi’s team as a “Community Organiser” in March 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Key responsibilities include the following:
Coordinate, plan and implement campaigns and programmes towards advancing strategic campaigns for Ndifuna Ukwazi. This work of will include:
Building meaningful relationships of trust with partners and relevant communities on matters relating to urban land justice;
Strategise and build community power through a range of tactics including meetings, protest actions, resistance actions, and participate in informal and formal structures;
Participate in, and provide leadership at meetings and engagements with network partners, movements and communities;
Work with Ndifuna Ukwazi’s Law Centre and Research and Advocacy teams to build community knowledge and support for litigation and campaigns;
Develop and sustain a movement building approach within the organisation; and
Ensuring that Ndifuna Ukwazi’s social movement and community partners are well-led, supported and politically engaged.
Requirements:
A history and demonstration of community organising work with a commitment to advancing social justice and equality;
Experience in workshop facilitations and a proven ability to facilitate meaningful engagements through individual, group and community engagements;
A proven ability to work well under pressure, independently and as a team member;
Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to easily relate to, and work with people across race, class, gender and age
A confident and engaging personality; and
Self-motivated, productive and solutions-driven.
Location: Cape Town

Salary: A salary commensurate with experience and with Ndifuna Ukwazi’s designated salary bands will be offered.
