BACKGROUND
The Africa Albinism Network (AAN) is an African-led charity founded in 2021 by the inaugural UN Independent Expert on albinism. AAN is committed to creating an inclusive world where persons with albinism can live free from brutality and discrimination. AAN promotes the rights, well-being, and inclusion of persons with albinism in Africa through advocacy, capacity development, collaboration, and research. It focuses its efforts on strengthening leaders of albinism groups across twenty-five African countries to enable concrete protection and inclusion of persons with albinism in their communities.

2. POSITION SUMMARY
As the Communications Officer, you will play a central role in bringing the Strategic Plan to life. Your work will ensure that AAN’s vision, values, and priorities are communicated clearly, compellingly, and accessibly across Africa and beyond. You will help position AAN as a leader in the African albinism movement by shaping its voice, amplifying its impact stories, and strategically aligning all communications with our strategic pillars, which are:
- Human Rights-Based Advocacy
- Capacity Development of Albinism Groups and HRDs
- Collaborations & Partnerships
- Research, Data & Storytelling
3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Communications Strategy:
- Update, align, and implement AAN’s communications strategy in line with the new Strategic Plan
- Develop budgets for communications activities in line with the Strategic Plan
Social Media Management:
- Develop and implement the organization’s social media style guide
- Create and post engaging content weekly across platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Linktree, not limited to, but mainly using Hootsuite
- Monitor trends, respond to messages promptly, and track analytics monthly and quarterly using Hootsuite and Meta Business Suites
Content Creation and Graphic Design:
- Manage AAN’s editorial and content calendar and contribute and edit new content
- Design branded material on Canva that is inclusive of accessibility needs, specifically for persons with albinism with low vision (infographics, short videos, reels, social media visuals, short reports, toolkits, posters for events)
- Assist the program and human rights advocacy team to document impact stories and success narratives in written or video formats and draft compelling written content such as blogs, articles, and campaign materials
- Lead the compilation of topics and draft compelling content for AAN’s newsletters using Mailchimp and cross-posting on AAN’s website and the LinkedIn newsletter feature
- Review and edit content that is officially translated into French or Portuguese, depending on your language proficiency, for campaigns such as International Albinism Awareness Day (June 13) and other relevant events
Website and Digital Presence:
- Ensure website content is up to date, the design is accessible, and aligned with organizational messaging
- Draft, edit, and submit blog articles for the website
- Monitor website performance and liaise with the web developer to ensure website security and maintenance
- Track analytics using Google Analytics
Internal Communication and Branding:
- Ensure brand consistency in all communications
- Assist programs and human rights advocacy teams in using brand assets and templates correctly
- Manage AAN’s photo database on Google, Canva, and SharePoint
Other relevant tasks
- Support the programs and human rights advocacy teams in developing communication plans for major AAN events such as Learning Forums (in person and virtually); UN International Days such as IWD, IAAD, Human Rights Day; international and regional conferences; and joint launches of reports, to name a few
- Ensure communications components are integrated into grant proposals and funding applications, including narrative and budget sections
- Track progress against key monthly and quarterly objectives and report on outcomes, and submit a monthly social media report and quarterly communications report with recommendations based on the analysis
- Lead search and selection process for service providers such as illustrators, videographers, graphic designers for large publications, and photographers to create communication materials and manage their work
- Join relevant AAN meetings as needed

4. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Required skills and experience:
Competencies:
- Demonstrates commitment to the AAN’s vision, mission, and core values;
- Knowledge of inclusive design and accessibility, or a desire to learn;
- Comfortable working remotely with multicultural teams across time zones;
- Excellent communication skills in English (both Written and Oral) are required;
- Basic translation skills from English to French or Portuguese are preferred;
- Ability to coordinate and collaborate with other colleagues to ensure consistent messaging;
- Ability to set clear, measurable goals while holding space for emergence and experimentation;
- Communicates creatively and effectively across different audiences;
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work gracefully under pressure;
- Project management and organizational skills, and attention to detail where required;
- Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude;
- Strong judgment and discretion in dealing with sensitive issues;
- Actively works towards continuing personal learning.
Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications, media, marketing, or other relevant field with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in communications, ideally in the international development, disability rights, or wider human rights sector;
- Experience maintaining an active presence on social media and familiarity with scheduling platforms, and can keep up with platform updates;
- Demonstrates strong social media and IT skills with tools such as WordPress, Hootsuite, Google Analytics, and Canva, and ability to use data to inform digital strategy.
- Experience in implementing inclusive communications strategies and plans for multi-stakeholder events, including budget development.
5. TIME & REMUNERATION
- Time commitment is 40 hours a week (Full Time).
- The salary is USD 24,000 annually
