Communications Officer – Zero Dropout Campaign

An alarmingly high proportion of learners are falling through the cracks of South Africa’s schooling system, joining more than three million young people who are not in any type of education, training or employment. The Zero Dropout Campaign is demonstrating what it takes to help learners stay in, and succeed at, school. This influential advocacy campaign, incubated by the DG Murray Trust, is looking for a social media savvy, quick-thinking individual to join their growing team as a Communications Officer.

The ideal candidate must be able to conceptualise and implement a clear communications plan across a range of platforms. They should be able to develop visually appealing, multimedia content for social media and manage the campaign’s social media community. They must also be comfortable with turning research reports into accessible and interesting communications products for a variety of channels and audiences.

Key responsibilities include:
Take the lead in implementing a digital communications strategy for the campaign and its programmes.
Manage the implementation of a communications plan for the Zero Dropout Campaign and its programmes across all platforms including the development of marketing collateral.
Create and manage content for digital, public and social media channels aligned to the campaign’s Communications and Advocacy Strategy.
Supporting the Head of Communications and Advocacy with stakeholder engagement for the campaign and its programmes.
Candidate requirements:
A relevant degree or diploma in journalism, media and communications or social sciences.
Outstanding English writing and verbal communication skills; as well as copywriting skills.
At least two years of relevant experience in developing digital content, and using digital content management systems.
Excellent time management skills and an ability to self-manage and work towards deadlines.
Sharp eye for detail.
Proven experience as a strong writer and the ability to work across media platforms.
Skills in interpreting data, framing and presenting arguments.
The ability to apply research insights and knowledge of behaviour change and communication theory to a practical implementation plan.
Passion for advocacy work in the education sector.
The position may require domestic travel in line with COVID-19 protocols and restrictions.
