Communications and Engagement Specialist Parent Power and Teachers CAN, DGMT
 
Parents and teachers play a critical role in the educational journey of South Africa’s children. When empowered, they are able to use their agency to shape the education system and ultimately the learning experience of South African children.
 
With that in mind, the DGMT is incubating 2 initiatives focused on building the agency of parents and teachers.
 
The Parent Power Movement aims to support parents to –
partner with schools to ensure quality education for their children and accountability for their learning;
build their shared identity as valued and active stakeholders in children’s education; and
leverage “ordinary magic” for the benefit of their children.
The Teachers’ Change Agent Network (Teachers CAN) seeks to build an empowered network of young teachers who –
are driven by the goal to enable all learners to reach their potential and
find a common identity rooted in professionalism, creativity and reimagining of the status quo.
Position:

While both projects are in the emergent phase, the DGMT is recruiting a Communications and Engagement Specialist to work across the 2 initiatives. Key to building both initiatives we require someone to join the team who is passionate about developing communications that build shared identity which in turn drives agency and momentum around these important community groups.  

As the Communications and Engagement Specialist supporting Parent Power Movement and the Teachers CAN, the successful candidate will take on the following responsibilities:
Develop, design and execute the overall communications strategy for the Parent Power and Teachers CAN;
Work with the Parent Power and Teachers CAN team to develop content for public communication that:
Builds the identity of parents and teachers as powerful actors;
Surfaces relevant stories of lived experiences of parents and teachers;
Drives public awareness of key issues through public media channels (print, radio and television); and
Frames key issues and solutions for decision-makers
Support the development of written publications and reports 

Requirements:

At a minimum, the candidate must have:
a relevant degree – in journalism, media and communications,  or social sciences;
5 years’ experience in a similar field;
excellent understanding of communities and the use of communication as a means to drive mobilisation;
excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
Preferably, the candidate has:
fluency in two or more South African languages  
Proven ability to engage with the media.
A background in advocacy work
the ability support content development across different mediums (visual, audio, written)
A valid driver’s license.
The ideal candidate has the following attributes, they:
have strong analytical abilities;
consider issues at a strategic level;
are able use communication to galvanize the public on improvement of education experiences and systems
This is an indefinite term contract. Salary negotiable based on skills and experience. The position is based in Cape Town, South Africa.
