The IEJ is a progressive economics think tank based in Johannesburg South Africa. The IEJ’s core objective is to provide policymakers and progressive social forces in South Africa with access to rigorous economic analysis, and well thought through policy options, as a basis for advancing systemic change. Interventions proposed by the IEJ must advance social justice, promote equitable economic development that realises socio economic rights, and ensure a thriving, democratic, environmentally sustainable, and inclusive economy that places the needs of the majority at the centre.

Communication is critical in advancing and supporting the work of the IEJ. The communications team needs to ensure the work of the IEJ is appropriately designed, targeted, and disseminated, and that all media engagement and platforms strengthen the advocacy of the IEJ.

The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) is advertising a post for a Communications and Advocacy Manager.

Under the supervision of IEJ’s Director the advertised role includes, at least, the following areas:
Communications strategy which includes developing, implementing and periodically reviewing a comprehensive communications strategy for IEJ;
Communications management and implementation. This involves developing a communications content plan, producing a wide range of communications materials and other outputs, maintaining content on IEJ’s website and generating engaging social media content; and
Organisational development through ensuring that IEJ’s communications strategy and plan contributes to its development efforts, working with programme and project teams to ensure communications work is effectively built into project plans and adequately resourced, and keeping abreast of developments in the field of non-profit strategic communications.
Requirements:
Minimum qualifications / experience required:
Higher degree in journalism, communications, international relations, social sciences, or a related field;
At least 5-7 of experience in similar role;
Experience in the development or non-profit sectors; and
Familiarity with and commitment to social and/or economic justice issues.
The candidates should have some or all of the following attributes:
Strong writing and analytical skills;
Creative and proactive problem solving skills;
Experience of advocacy on issues relating to social and/or economic justice for different audiences;
Proven ability to conceptualise communications in terms of audiences, objectives and channels; and
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in communications strategy, tools and channels; strong technical skills, including familiarity with digital platforms, email marketing platforms (MailChimp), website content management (WordPress), and search engine optimization best practices; proven track record of growing social media following.

The contract will be a full-time twelve-month contract beginning as soon as possible. The contract is renewable for a further two years, performance and funding dependent. The position will be based in Johannesburg. Remuneration will be at market rates and based on work experience.
