STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree with experience and training/courses in one or more of the following disciplines: Climate Change adaptation, Agricultural studies and Food Security, Natural Resource Management.
  • 6-8 years’ experience, progressively responsible, job related experience climate change adaptation planning, food security analysis or related area

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The consultant will work under the overall supervision of the Project Coordinator.

JOB PURPOSE

To understand better the near and long-term climate change impacts on food security and nutrition to inform national-level policy and proactive implementation of key adaptation measures. The consultant will develop decadal and long-term predictions and use the predictions to assess impacts on food security and nutrition and identify potential adaptation options to inform national policies and plan.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (NOT ALL-INCLUSIVE)

1: Conduct initial desk-based consultations and research

  • Collect and compile the existing climate change vulnerability assessment information in Lesotho and review relevant, up-to-date literature on Lesotho’s climatology .

2: Complete climate risk analyses and mapping

  • Identify key hazards of relevance to project sites.
  • Map major hazards of the project sites and the country, together with Zoning of hazard prone areas (hotspots) and livelihoods,
  • Assess impacts of the climate change induced hazards and risks on Food Security and Nutrition including the economic cost at the national level for a more integrated adaptation planning and the Vulnerabilities within different livelihoods of communities,
  •  Highlight major lessons and experiences regarding the strengths and weaknesses of key stakeholders in addressing climate, food security and Nutrition challenges within the pilot sites (Mafeteng, Mohale’s Hoek and Quthing).
  • Project the climate change impacts on food security and nutrition under current climate variability and future climate change

3: Conduct field work – site visits, consultations, interviews, and focus groups discussions- to identify the key elements of the food systems and their associated climate variability and change risks.

4: Identify, appraise, and prioritize adaptation options through a participatory approach

  • Evaluate the costs effectiveness of the proposed adaptation options; and
  • Draft Concept Notes for the prioritised adaptation options.

5: Synthesize findings and draft assessment report and finalize databases and maps.

  • Assemble and test the tools with a group of decision-makers, and update/improve on the tools based on user feedback
  • Draft summary for the policy makers.

  • Excellent working knowledge and experience in undertaking climate risk and vulnerability assessment and adaptation planning in the agriculture sector;
  • Familiarity with the UN System.
  • Proficiency in Windows, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Competencies: Cognitive Capacity, Teamwork, Action Management, Innovation, Partnering, Client Orientation.
  • Expertise in qualitative data analysis
