The Citizen Justice Network (CJN) is an award-winning media innovation that trains community paralegals to be radio journalists, the community paralegals are established, trusted activists and fighters for social change in their communities. We empower them with journalism skills necessary to help their communities and assist with access to justice. CJN is about helping rural community members produce their own radio stories.

CJN seeks to appoint a Project Officer for the Training and Network Development to be based in Johannesburg.

The position is offered on a one-year, renewable contract basis.

The purpose of the position is focused on mentoring and the training of community paralegals and community radio journalists. Training and mentoring radio journalists working with CJN, and supporting similar work in Kenya. The candidate would be responsible for choosing community paralegal partners and radio stations for CJN’s expansion into new areas within South Africa. Training focuses on media ethics, radio journalism and story development.

Responsibilities:

  • Build an annual training programme and prepare teaching plans
  • Direct structured learning experiences and monitoring their quality
  • Familiarise new recruits to the programme and conducting orientation sessions
  • Deliver training courses
  • Assess the effectiveness of training
  • Recruit, vet and select new advice office partners
  • Stay abreast of new trends and tools in journalism

Requirements:

  • Postgraduate degree
  • Experience as a working journalist
  • Experience with journalism training in rural and semi-rural areas
  • Minimum of eight to 10 years of experience in the media and/or media development
  • Experience with the community paralegal sector is crucial
  • Experience with the community radio sector is crucial
  • Experience with media innovation projects
  • Experience with writing reports to donors after the completion of projects
  • Experience with working with projects in Kenya and South Africa
  • Driver’s license and capacity to travel
  • Proven ability to carry out journalistic training and mentoring
  • Ability to develop and implement various networking capacity development programs for paralegal and radio stations
  • Ability to work as a member of a small, hard-working, team which is passionate about human rights
  • Multimedia skills (radio, video, film)
  • A willingness to assist with a variety of projects including organising events and seminars
