Tugela Mill

Civil Technician ( HRL15 )

Sappi Tugela Mill requires a Civil Technician to coordinate building maintenance and new projects as per the Mill requirements by allocating priority tasks to the contractors in co-operation with the Production and Engineering Staff.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning and Organising

  • Consults with production managers / engineers concerning major work in progress
  • Verify material and contract resources availability for future work on a weekly basis
  • Authorises labour, material and transport for work to be undertaken outside the factory premises
  • Inspect Mill buildings, roads, effluent channels as per maintenance schedules / daily rounds
  • Plan and effect remedial action identified during inspections in consultation production managers / engineers concerned
  • Assist planning assistant to order critical material
  • Obtains quotations for projects / maintenance work via procurement
  • Assists the Engineer whenever necessary and acts on his behalf when he is not available
  • Develop maintenance schedule for all civil assets

Contrator Management

  • Allocate daily work to contractors on the basis of instructions from Engineer / consultation with the relevant departments
  • Instruct contractors on safety / work procedures
  • Supervise contractors through daily inspections
  • Report suspected malpractices to engineer
  • Maintains ethical work practices on an ongoing basis by taking the necessary action constantly and fairly

Project Management

  • Draws up specifications for project and maintenance work which will form part of tender documents
  • Manages the civil building aspect of new project work onsite.
  • Ensure compliance to construction regulations where applicable

Health, Safety, Environment and Quality

  • Maintains standards of workmanship and quality of contractors and own staff on an ongoing basis by regular inspections or work in progress and report noncompliance to Engineer
  • Maintains safety standards within department and ensure compliance with statutory legislation and codes of practice by monthly onsite inspections of work practices, scaffolding, machinery and tools
  • Ensure all environmental procedures / best practices are adhered to during the execution of project and maintenance work

Cost control

  • Authorises overtime to be worked on a weekly basis
  • Record and allocate labour and materials against the relevant works order for cost allocation and expenditure control in consultation with the engineer

Required Qualifications / Experience

  • Relevant qualification in Civil Engineering (T4 min)
  • 5 years’ experience in construction management
  • Factory exposure would be advantageous
  • SAP knowledge will be advantageous
  • Computer literacy
