Chemonics International, seeks a chief technical advisor for the USAID/ VukaNow Activity. This five-year project aims to support the shared commitments of the U.S. Government, the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), member states, private sector partners, and civil society to significantly decrease wildlife crime across southern Africa. The purpose of the Activity is to coordinate learning and sharing and support strategic regional activities to address wildlife crime challenges. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world. This position will be based in Pretoria, South Africa or remotely within SADC.

I. Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The chief technical advisor will oversee and direct VukaNow’s technical interventions, to enhance collaborative efforts to combat wildlife crime in the region. The chief technical advisor will use established relationships with wildlife management agencies in SADC member states   as well as law enforcement and anti-poaching (LEAP) task forces where they exist to facilitate the implementation of the SADC LEAP Strategy. The chief technical advisor will work with Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Directorate and other stakeholders to support government capacity building, policy development, and to secure regional buy-in for standardized protocols and operating procedures in law enforcement, information sharing systems, and establishment and functioning of a regional wildlife forensics network. The chief technical advisor will also guide capacity building efforts and verify information from a scientific, academic, and international perspective.

II. Qualifications
Advanced degree in wildlife biology, conservation, or similar
10-15 years of experience working in southern Africa with national parks, government entities, transfrontier conservation areas, and SADC structures
Extensive experience crafting and implementing wildlife policy across SADC member states, developing frameworks for international efforts to combat wildlife crime, and supporting networks’ capacity building
Expertise in building partnerships and using data for shared learning
III. Length of Assignment

Term of assignment will be from on/about March 2022 to on/about March 2023.
