Based in Midrand, Grow Great, a campaign aimed at galvanizing South Africa towards a national commitment to zero stunting by 2030, is recruiting for an experienced professional to take up the role of Chief Operations Officer (COO) for the campaign. We are looking for an outstanding candidate with extensive financial management and operational experience to play a lead role in our organisation and join us on our quest to bring South Africa closer to a stunting free future.

ROLE OVERVIEW

As a member of the senior leadership team, the COO is jointly responsible for the attainment of the campaign’s strategic objectives, with specific accountability for operational performance. Key responsibilities will include operational planning and management, financial management, legislative compliance, relationship management and HR management. The COO will ensure the campaign has robust operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures. This role is more than just primarily responsible for operations and finance, we are seeking an individual who is creative and entrepreneurial and also takes the initiative to propose, design and manage projects that further the campaign’s goals. The COO will report to the Executive Director and has one direct report (financial accountant). All-inclusive salary package ranging from R950 000-R1 050 000 based on experience and professional qualifications.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operational planning & management:
Oversight and management of the operations of Grow Great and its programs, to ensure the efficient management and operations of the campaign.
Ensure there is a strong operational & logistics strategy to sustain high quality program delivery at scale
Ensure that appropriate systems and controls are in place to efficiently manage organisational & program resources
Audit and ensure continuous improvement of current systems for effectiveness & efficiency
Identify opportunities for implementation of new technology that promotes efficiency
Ensure that systems and procedures used are understood by program staff and relevant program beneficiaries
Identify risks and threats in collaboration with wider organisational team proactively
Lead annual operations planning

Board process management
Meeting preparation, reporting and accountabilities in terms of legal compliance

Funder relationships and agreements
Resource Mobilisation
Establish and execute a fund-raising strategy in consultation with the Executive Director and Executive Committee

Financial management:
Oversight of financial management, budgeting, expenditure tracking and external/internal audits
Ensure effective and efficient financial administration and compliance with the law
Ensure effective financial reporting to all donors

Human resource management
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and internal policies
Manage HR matters, including the development and management of staff development & wellbeing policies

Formal stakeholder agreements & contracts
Negotiate and manage contracts needed to support the organisation
Critically review all legal agreements before signature by the Executive Director
Assist in the drafting of legal agreements
Maintain template agreements (such as grant and consulting agreements)

Compliance
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, including taxation
Keep abreast of developments on applicable/relevant legislation

The ability to be an active and collegial team player and demonstrate flexibility to provide support across the campaign’s strategies is essential to success in this role. In addition, the successful applicant will have the following skillsets & characteristics:
Postgraduate degree required, ideally CA or MBA
At least 10 years’ experience in Financial Management, HR and operations
Previous experience as COO of an organization is a plus
Demonstrated experience linking the operations of an organisation to support the delivery of the strategy
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
Ability to work non-traditional hours
Strong work ethic and ability to prioritize and multi-task
Experience working in a team context
