RESPONSIBLE TO: Senior Cartographer
JOB SUMMARY
The Cartographer will report directly to the Senior Cartographer and will work under their direction to plan, organize, manage, and oversee the activities of the Cartography and GIS section. The role includes supervising technical and clerical personnel and performing other related duties as required.
MAIN DUTIES
- Conduct routine analysis of survey data and other related data using GIS and related technology.
- Collect, input, analyze, manipulate, retrieve spatial and non-spatial data, and prepare reports and census atlases.
- Attribute, maintain, and digitize cartographic data.
- Update and maintain the digital enumeration area database.
- Delineate geographic areas such as enumeration areas.
- Supervise fieldwork-mapping programs.
- Prepare thematic maps for data collection during surveys and censuses.
- Manage the maps filing system and perform other related tasks.
- Develop standards for creating enumeration area maps and standardized map templates.
- Assist the Senior Cartographer in preparing work control forms for census cartography and analyze these forms on a weekly basis.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Education and Training
Option 1:
- Master’s Degree in Cartography, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or a closely related field.
- Extensive experience using ESRI products (ArcView, ArcInfo, ArcGIS, and ArcIMS), Freehand, and project management tools such as MS Project and Visio.
Option 2:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Cartography, Geography, GIS, or a related field.
- Two (2) years of experience in cartographic work.
- Postgraduate qualification in Cartography, Geography, or GIS is an added advantage.
- Extensive experience using ESRI products, Freehand, and project management tools such as MS Project and Visio.
Option 3:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics or an equivalent qualification.
- Four (4) years of post-qualification experience in cartographic work.
- Extensive experience using ESRI products, Freehand, and project management tools such as MS Project and Visio.
RESPONSIBILITIES
For Work of Others
- Supervise Assistant Cartographers, review their work, and assist the Senior Cartographer in setting sectional priorities.
For Property
- Ensure proper use of office equipment.
For Effect of Errors
- Responsible for errors in data collection, compilation, coding, editing, capturing, and cleaning.
For Safety of Others
- Assist the Senior Cartographer in ensuring the security of field workers.

- Assist and advise the Senior Cartographer on technical and administrative issues.

- Work with minimal supervision but provide progress reports during divisional meetings.

- Ensure all villages/living spaces in the country are included in the Enumeration Area Database and update changes as needed.
