The CSIR has a vacancy for a Candidate Telecommunications Technologist in the Networked Systems and Applications impact area within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to provide technical support to the research and development team in the Spectrum Access and Management Innovation (SAMI) research group. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct hardware, firmware and embedded Linux development and implementation;
  • Conduct laboratory testing of radio devices and radio frequency field measurements;
  • Provide technical support to researchers and developers;
  • Read, write and understand technical documents, manuals, specifications and block diagrams;
  • Develop test procedures and test hardware, software and systems;
  • Conduct field deployment, testing and debugging;
  • Perform technical Installations, which includes working at heights;
  • Conduct wireless networks audits; and
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues related to product development.


Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A National Diploma in electronic / electrical engineering;
  • A Bachelor’s degree will be advantageous;
  • Basic understanding of wireless communications networks;
  • Embedded C programming;
  • Ability to read/verify schematics and verify design principles;
  • Ability to troubleshoot/verify printed circuit boards (PCB) and design principles;
  • Familiar with on-board communication protocols (I2C, SPI, CAN, UART, etc.);
  • Familiar with electronic measurement instruments and software test methods;
  • Preferably having a driver’s license and willing to undertake long distance field trips to rural areas in South Africa when there is a need.
