Role Overview:

ActionAid is implementing the three-year project ‘Combatting Modern Slavery in Ethiopia and Ghana’, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad). The project aims to decrease the scale and prevalence of modern slavery in Ethiopia and Ghana through improved government legislation and business practices, as well as increased rights for survivors and/or those at risk of modern slavery. The post holder will support the work of the Women’s Rights team with a dotted line to the Campaigns team in the effective implementation of campaign and advocacy components of the project, with a specific focus on two key campaigns: efforts for the ratification of ILO C190 and efforts for the adoption of a United Nations Binding Treaty on Business and Human Rights. The post holder will help to achieve project objectives, including through supporting the delivery of capacity-building, alliance-building, and advocacy events, helping with production of campaigns materials, assisting with campaigns and advocacy monitoring, reporting and evaluation, and contributing to good internal communications and material sharing for campaigns. Roughly 60% of the Campaigner’s time will be devoted to planning, coordinating, and delivering global-level activities with the remainder of the time dedicated to coordinating and supporting national-level activities being implemented by the project teams in Ethiopia and Ghana.

The successful candidate will:
Work closely with Global Campaign Leads for the ratification of ILO C190 and the adoption of a United Nations Binding Treaty on Business and Human Rights to ensure all project-related activities are delivered on time and to a high-standard. Explore ways of utilising project funds to maximise impact and progress. Write evidence-based internal and external reports that capture the progress of these international campaigns against a Project Overall Results Framework.
Coordinate with, support, and provide technical assistance to ActionAid Ghana and ActionAid Ethiopia to ensure national level campaigns for the ratification of ILO C190 and the adoption of a United Nations Binding Treaty on Business and Human Rights are effective, aligned with international-level campaigns and value for money. Support countries to maximise their reach and supporter engagement figures, as well as to increase likelihood of positive outcomes from campaigns and advocacy initiatives. Alongside the MEL and Research Coordinator, support countries with report-writing and data-collection for Campaigns and Advocacy-related activities.
Overseeing project progress toward targets, including the identification of any risks to the implementation of campaigns or advocacy initiatives. Working with the International Project Manager to ensure the timely and quality delivery of the project as per the Results Framework. Upholding high standards of safeguarding during campaigns and advocacy initiatives.
Build alliances with key external international, regional and national bodies, organisations and coalitions so as to maximise the efficacy of campaigns and advocacy initiatives, raise the profile of the project and build solidarity. A focus should be given to networking in sub-Saharan Africa.
Work with consultants to develop advocacy and campaigns materials, web and print content and other products as required by the project. Ensure these align with donor-requirements and meet the needs of the project.
Minimum Requirements
A relevant bachelor’s degree in international development, social sciences, or another related field.
Proven experience in networking and alliance-building with international and regional CSO networks, coalitions, or
structures. Experience designing and coordinating activities as a result of alliance-building.
Experience of leading the delivery of advocacy initiatives for international, regional, or national-level impact, as well as experience supporting the delivery of global campaigns.
Experience in the production of effective campaign materials, resources, and toolkits.
Experience in managing consultant relationships including the remote management of deliverables.
Experience of undertaking research, fact-checks, and writing for an external audience.
At least a working and preferably a good knowledge of global efforts for the ratification of ILO C190 and/or the adoption of United Nations Binding Treaty for Business and Human Rights.
Experience in campaigns that champion women’s rights and/or relate to the protections of women and girls. Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Experience in global campaigns for the ratification of ILO conventions and/or the adoption of a United Nations Binding Treaty on Business and Human Rights would be advantageous.
Experience or technical knowledge of modern slavery, including experience of research into issues related to migration, human trafficking, forced labour, child labour and unfair contracts.
Ability to communicate in Kiswahili or any of the official or local languages of Ghana or Ethiopia is advantageous.
