CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR INCLUSION IN THE SADC SECRETARIAT DATABASE OF FREELANCE TRANSLATORS AND INTERPRETERS

Background

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) currently has sixteen Member States[1] with a population of approximately 277 million people and a combined GDP of USD 575.5 billion (2010). The overall objective of SADC is to achieve development and economic growth, which is to be attained through increased regional integration, built on democratic principles and equitable and sustainable development.

In conducting its day-to-day business, the Secretariat uses three working languages, namely, English, French and Portuguese. It is against this background that SADC Secretariat wishes to update its Database of Freelance Translators and Interpreters and, therefore, invites suitably qualified and experienced Freelance Translators and Interpreters who are citizens of SADC to apply for inclusion in the Database, as follows:

         1. TRANSLATION

Qualified Freelance Translators are invited to apply by expressing their interest in being considered for inclusion in the SADC Database of Freelance Translators and Interpreters to translate SADC Official Documents and Service SADC Policy and Technical Meetings as Translators.

Candidates are requested to indicate if they are both Translators and Interpreters.

Freelance Translators who use TRADOS will be given preference.

         2. INTERPRETATION

Qualified Freelance Interpreters are invited to apply by expressing their interest in being considered for inclusion in the SADC Database of Freelance Translators and Interpreters to Service SADC Policy and Technical Meetings as Interpreters.

Candidates are requested to indicate if they are both Interpreters and Translators.

         3. APPLICABLE RATES

The SADC Secretariat offers competitive rates for translation and interpreting as follows:

3.1      Translation: USD 30 / 250 WORDS (OFF-SITE)

3.2      Translation: USD 370/DAY (ON-SITE)

3.3      Interpretation: USD 400 / DAY

3.4      DSA for the City of Assignment

All payments will be made in accordance with the SADC Financial Rules and procedures and other applicable regulations.

         4. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS

Translators and Interpreters who are already in the SADC Database are required to re-submit their applications.

Applications should bear the subject CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR INCLUSION IN THE SADC SECRETARIAT DATABASE OF FREELANCE TRANSLATORS AND INTERPRETERS and must be submitted by not later than Wednesday, 31st July 2019 through the following email address: [email protected]

LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED, neither will submissions received via telephone, telex or facsimile.

ONLY SADC CITIZENS WILL BE CONSIDERED.

All applications should be accompanied by the following:

4.1      Short covering letter stating the position that you want to be considered for and describe how your qualifications, experience and competencies are relevant to the position.

4.2      Updated Curriculum Vitae not more than Five (5) pages.

4.3      Certified Copies of Diplomas and/or Certificates.

4.4      Certified copies of National Identification Cards and Passports.

         5. COMMUNICATION

Only applicants with the desired qualifications and skills will be considered for inclusion in the SADC Database of Freelance Translators and Interpreters.

A short written translation test may be administered to ascertain the suitability of the applicant for inclusion in the Database.

Candidates applying for the Interpretation Stream will be assessed on-the-job upon which their inclusion in the Database will be determined.

Regular assessments will be conducted for both Translators and Interpreters to determine their continued suitability for retention in the Database.

The SADC Secretariat reserves the right to reject any application not deemed suitable for inclusion in the Database and has no obligation to award translation and/or interpretation contracts to any successful applicant upon inclusion in the Database.
