enke: Make Your Mark a Business Development Manager (BDM) to join our team, based in Johannesburg, South Africa. 

The primary purpose of the BDM role is to work closely with the CEO to develop and manage enke’s fundraising, income generation, business development and execute on our financial sustainability strategy. Furthermore, he/she is required to oversee the efficient running of the organisation’s income generation and business development department.

The role involves identification and pursuit of funding and investment opportunities, building relationships with donors and clients, and directly contributing to generating income to sustainably support enke’s ongoing work. At enke, income generation – both through traditional fundraising and through the creation and sale of income generating services and projects that will support our non-profit core business.

This is more than pure fundraising and sales – it is cultivating relationships, designing new services, and creating buy in to the mission of the organisation. 

The Business Development Manager will have the opportunity to work with a close-knit, fun and high-performing team creating impact across the country, and play a key part in growing the organisation.

Start date: May 2022

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Location: Parktown, Johannesburg with some travel and some weekend work. Our organisation operations are a hybrid of 75% remote / work-from-home with flexible arrangements for office-based work.

Remuneration: R25,000 – R28,000 per month gross salary based on qualifications and experience. (Benefits: Medical Aid Allowance)

Duration: Full time position. 12-month contract with possibility of extension based on performance. 

Responsibilities:
Income Generation:

Developing, implementing and monitoring progress toward short- and long-term fundraising strategy and goals
Lead proposal development and coordinate teams to input into funding applications and program budgets in line with the program quality framework
Write high quality tailored funding applications addressing donor priorities while contributing to the organisation’s vision
Leading the income generation team to drive sales- and fundraising- related activities
Maintaining oversight over all fundraising activities including major giving, grants, special events, direct mail appeals, corporate partnership initiatives.
Support the delivery of fundraising and/or donor engagement events
Managing expense budgets for all fundraising and development efforts
Leading the creation, review and execution of the fundraising strategy
Maintenance of the database of potential fundraising sources and existing donors. 

This includes tracking fundraising and reporting deadlines, records and documentation, and ensuring that contract requirements are communicated to all relevant departments within enke.

Generate regular reports on the status of fundraising targets and progress on opportunities to the Board and senior executives as required (minimum is quarterly board meetings)

Manage the Business Development Team:

Management of the Business Development Officers and other staff as assigned to ensure high quality narrative and financial reports and donor management
Supervising, setting goals with and for, and reviewing the performance of development and fundraising staff
Contribute to the organisation’s annual planning processes having ownership of the fundraising related submission
Serve as a role model at all times, embodying enke’s values and ensuring staff adherence to policy and procedure across the organization;

Donor Engagement, Stewardship & Admin:

Identify and cultivate relationships with potential new donors, including leading and/or supporting others to lead strategic pitches;
Collate intelligence / mapping of opportunities available at national, regional and global levels
Network to stay ahead of the latest trends and up-to-date on changing donor priorities
Work closely with the CEO to come up with engaging cultivation and stewardship opportunities for prospective and existing donors
Ensure the organisation’s income tracking is accurately updated on a monthly basis and all opportunities in the pipeline are clearly documented
Assist the CEO with the organization’s marketing, messaging and communications, including contributing to the setting of, and monitoring adherence to branding guidelines and creating mass communications pieces.
Serving as a public representative of the organization, including cultivating relationships with community members, including prospective volunteers and supporters in order to build awareness of and commitment to enke’s work.
Overseeing the maintenance and expansion of the organization’s database of supporters. 

Contribute to Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning:

Prepare regular updates/reports on development activities to assist with decision-making on future activity with specified groups.
Ensure that the organisation’s client relationship management (CRM – SalesForce) and knowledge databases are up to date
Assist with monitoring, evaluation of enke’s work and compilation of project and program reports including, but not limited to compilation of stakeholder and other internal reports as directed and needed by the Head of Programs and CEO
Contributing to quarterly and annual reports as requested by the CEO and Board 

Minimum Requirements (Skills & Qualifications):

A tertiary qualification preferably in Sales, Marketing, Business Administration, Public Relations or Communication degree / diploma
Valid Driver’s License for minimum 12 months
Experience in fundraising, sales, marketing, training development or similar
Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities within tight deadlines
Excellent written communication skills, presentation skills and interpersonal skills
High proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel and Word
Strong project management skills
Ability and flexibility to work evenings and weekends with some travel across South Africa
Ability to accomplish projects with minimal supervision and take direction
Thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
Excited by new ideas and processes with a positive and professional attitude and ability to work in a team
Friendly, outgoing self-starter with the ability to engage a variety of clients on the phone & in person
Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner at all levels; internal and external to the organization

Experience working in the non-profit sector or fundraising
