The African Union (AU) invites applications from suitably qualified African nationals for the position of Bilingual Secretary. Reporting to the Director of Administration and Human Resources Management, the successful candidate will provide bilingual secretarial, administrative, and operational support to ensure the smooth functioning of the department.
Purpose of the Job
The successful candidate will provide professional administrative and secretarial support by managing correspondence, maintaining filing systems, coordinating office activities, scheduling appointments, and facilitating communication in two African Union working languages.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, type, proofread and translate reports, correspondence, documents and messages in two AU working languages.
- Manage supervisors’ diaries, appointments and schedules.
- Receive visitors and provide relevant information.
- Respond to and screen telephone calls and emails.
- Maintain proper filing and document management systems.
- Provide routine administrative support to assigned departments.
- Monitor office equipment, furniture and stationery.
- Assist with logistical arrangements and departmental activities.
- Follow up on meeting decisions and correspondence.
- Support record management and retrieval systems.
- Perform reception duties when required.
- Carry out any other duties assigned by management.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Applicants must possess either:
- A Diploma in Administrative Services, Office Management, Secretarial Studies, Clerical Studies or a related field with at least three (3) years’ relevant bilingual secretarial experience.
OR
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Administrative Services, Office Management, Secretarial Studies, Clerical Studies or a related field with at least two (2) years’ relevant bilingual secretarial experience.
Experience in public institutions, diplomatic missions, international organizations or international NGOs will be an added advantage.
Required Skills
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
- Strong planning and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Good interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure.
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
- Professionalism, discretion and confidentiality.
- Proficiency in one AU working language (English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish or Swahili). Fluency in another AU working language is an added advantage.

Contract Duration
The appointment is on a three (3) year regular contract, with the first twelve (12) months serving as a probationary period. Subject to satisfactory performance, the contract is renewable.
Remuneration
Successful candidates will receive:
- Basic annual salary of US$15,758 (GSA5 Step 1).
- Post adjustment allowance.
- Housing allowance.
- Education allowance for eligible dependents.
