Established in 1872, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the founding society of the SPCA movement in South Africa and is the oldest animal welfare organisation in the country. A registered non-profit organisation (NPO 003-244) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO 930004317), the society relies on the support of concerned individuals and corporates to continue operating. Over the past 147 years SPCA have diligently carried out our mission to prevent cruelty to animals. This is done through education, law enforcement, veterinary care services (operating an animal hospital, and four mobile clinics serving impoverished communities), an Animal Care Centre, Horse Care and Farmyard Unit, and Wildlife Facility.

Based in Cape Town Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) seeks to fill the following position:

BEQUEST AND MAJOR DONOR OFFICER

The Bequest and Major Donor Officer will operate in the Communication and Resource Development department and reports to the manager of this department.  This is a senior position within the department, the primary function of this position is to develop and nurture relationships with bequest donors, recruit new and prospective bequest donors and work with the department’s manager in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and growth of trust, corporate and major donors of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

Major Responsibilities for this position include:
Administration of Legacy Gifts
Development and execution of the Major Donor Stewardship Plan
Financial Control of own budget and administration of donor advised funds
Achieving an income target of around R12M per year
To grow the Bequest, Major Donor, Corporate, Trust and Foundation income lines
The Implement a bequest prospect communication plan
Identification and Cultivation of legacy supporters
Develop and maintain the funding application plan
Accurate record keeping
Grant Application and management including applications to, and reporting on funds received from, Major donors, the NLC national and international donors
The Bequest and Major Donor Officer must have knowledge and skills including:
Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate and develop relationships people on all levels – senior representatives of grant making institutions, corporates and bequest donors
Strong verbal communication skills – ability to prepare and give presentations to prospective bequest donors
Very good writing skills (strong command of English) with experience in grant writing for non-profit organisations essential
Good administrative skills with natural attention to detail
An understanding of how the grant making process works and how to effectively prepare and structure grant proposals, will be an added advantage
Good organisation skills with an ability to plan bequest events and delegate functions to other team members
Self-starter – ability to work independently and be accountable
Good track record as an effective senior fundraiser within a non-profit environment
Ability to converse in Afrikaans (fluency an added advantage)
Driver license a requirement
Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge NXT an advantage.
