IFC Transaction Advisory Services (CTA)
IFC’s Transaction Advisory Services Department (CTA) consists of two business lines:
- PPP Transaction Advisory (C3P):
Provides advisory services to governments and public entities to structure sustainable long‑term infrastructure projects through Public‑Private Partnerships (PPPs), delivering affordable and efficient public and social services. Sectors include electricity, water and sanitation, transportation, telecommunications, health, education, and housing. - Corporate Finance Services (CFS):
Includes:- M&A Advisory (buy‑side and sell‑side)
- Equity Mobilization Program (EMP)
- Asset monetization of listed or soon‑to‑be‑listed entities
In FY25, CTA mobilized USD 6 billion in private investment, representing almost 25% of IFC’s total core mobilization. CTA currently manages over 100 active engagements, with Africa hubs in Johannesburg, Cairo, Nairobi, Abidjan, and Abuja.
CTA advises on:
- Public‑Private Partnerships (PPP / BOT concessions)
- Restructuring and privatization of State‑Owned Enterprises
- Corporate finance activities including equity raising, M&A, and pre‑IPO support
Position Overview
PPP Transaction Advisory is seeking an (Associate) Investment Officer to support the Southern Africa CTA Hub based in Johannesburg, covering 12 countries, including South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Mauritius, Seychelles, Angola, Comoros, and Madagascar.
The (Associate) Investment Officer will support both the C3P team (primary focus) and the Corporate Finance Services team based on business needs. The role reports to the Southern Africa Hub Leader and the Regional Manager for CTA Africa.
Roles and Responsibilities
The role involves execution of advisory mandates and includes, but is not limited to:
- Supporting origination and business development activities across the Southern Africa hub
- Preparing pitch books, background research, and concept notes aligned with country strategies
- Developing and maintaining client relationships, including project scoping and feasibility assessment
- Preparing and reviewing internal approval documentation and managing consultant procurement and budgets
- Identifying and addressing legal, regulatory, and financial constraints affecting private sector participation
- Leading day‑to‑day project team activities, including review of technical outputs and financial models
- Developing transaction structures and presenting recommendations to IFC management and government clients
- Supporting transaction tender processes from prequalification to commercial close
- Participating in meetings with government clients and investors
- Coaching and managing junior team members
- Supporting upstream market‑creation activities aligned with IFC 3.0
- Supporting Corporate Finance mandates where required
- Assisting with strategy or additional projects as necessary
Selection Criteria
Minimum Requirements
- MBA or equivalent postgraduate degree in Business, Finance, or Economics
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in:
- Project finance
- Corporate finance
- M&A and privatization
- Infrastructure private equity
Preferred Experience and Skills
- Experience in infrastructure transactions or PPP advisory, preferably in Africa
- Business development experience and preparation of proposals and concept notes
- Strong client relationship management skills
- Experience with financial and/or contractual closings
- Understanding of government, investor, developer, and consultant environments
- Ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and deliver under deadlines
- Strong financial modeling and transaction structuring expertise
- Ability to multitask and work under pressure
- Strong analytical, conceptual, and communication skills
- Ability to work in culturally diverse and geographically dispersed teams
- Willingness to travel frequently on short notice
- Excellent written and verbal English; Portuguese is desirable
