POSITION: Assistant Programmes Officer

Number of Positions: One (1)
Department: Broadcasting
Responsible To: Programmes Officer


Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Programmes Officer, the Assistant Programmes Officer is responsible for producing and presenting radio programmes and participating in live shifts. The incumbent also supervises the Programmes Assistant and contributes to the development, coordination, and execution of engaging radio content that aligns with editorial standards and audience expectations.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Produces, plans, and presents radio programmes across scheduled shifts.
  • Participates in the station’s daily broadcasts as a presenter and content contributor.
  • Supervises and supports the work of the Programmes Assistant.
  • Researches topics and background material for use in programmes.
  • Writes scripts, programme outlines, and promotional content.
  • Conducts interviews in the studio, by telephone, or on location.
  • Collaborates with producers, presenters, and technical teams to ensure high-quality broadcasts.
  • Develops new content ideas in line with programming objectives and audience interests.
  • Liaises with the Programmes Officer to coordinate programming schedules.
  • Monitors programme performance and ensures consistency in editorial quality.
  • Uses social media and digital platforms to promote programmes and engage audiences.
  • Reports technical and operational issues to the Programmes Officer.

Skills Required

  • Excellent presentation and on-air performance skills.
  • Strong content development, scripting, and interviewing abilities.
  • Leadership and supervisory capabilities.
  • Fluency in Sesotho and English (both written and spoken).
  • Sound knowledge of radio production techniques and workflows.
  • Strong understanding of audience engagement and content trends.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in social media and digital broadcasting tools.

Representational Duties

  • Liaises with media houses, international organizations, and other radio stations.
  • Attends workshops and conferences related to broadcasting and production operations.

Job Specification

  • Diploma in Journalism, Media Studies, Broadcasting, or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in radio production or presentation will be an added advantage.

Responsibilities

For Work of Others:
Responsible for maintaining smooth working relations with reporters, senior reporters, sub-editors, editors, programme producers, librarians, and the Head of News.

For Property (Equipment, Materials, and Finance):
Ensures the safety and security of studio equipment, computers, and recorded materials under their custody.

For Effect of Errors:
Accountable for errors committed by junior staff that may lead to loss of property, data, or service interruptions due to failure to observe safety and operational procedures.

For Safety of Others:
Responsible for enforcing proper safety and operational procedures to ensure the safety of all personnel under supervision.

  • The incumbent has the authority to use creativity and initiative to enhance programme structure and production quality.

Problem Solving

  • Regularly resolves challenges directly related to radio production and programming.

Supervision Received

  • Works independently under the supervision of the Programme Producer and Controller of Programmes.

Dexterity

  • Requires excellent eyesight, listening ability, and mental alertness for recording or producing live broadcasts.
  • Demands artistic resourcefulness and creativity.

Contacts

  • Programme Producer: during production meetings and for guidance and approvals.
  • News and programme personnel, and engineering teams: on a daily basis for operational coordination.
  • Other departments and sections within the Ministry of Communications: for coverage of ministry activities.
  • External organizations: for discussions on areas of mutual interest.
  • The public: to explain and disseminate information about departmental programmes and activities.

Effort

Mental Effort:
Requires high levels of focus and mental engagement to ensure quality production and live delivery.

Physical Effort:
Minimal physical effort required, except during field coverage.

Emotional Effort:
Work often involves tight deadlines and high pressure, particularly during live broadcasts or breaking news coverage.


Working Conditions

Unfavourable Conditions:
May work under cold studio environments or challenging field conditions during remote broadcasts.

Hazards:
The incumbent may face risks, particularly during elections or politically tense situations, where broadcasting activities attract heightened public or political scrutiny.
